Just picked up a new iPad and am having a hard time finding a case locally. Was wondering what or where is everyone getting case wise for the new 9.7 iPad?

Thanks

I am hearing the same thing. Apple doesn't make the leather case anymore that bought for my ipad air. Too bad. I love that case.

That leather case is my favorite, too. Tough, handsome, and comfortable - that one's hard to beat.

The 2017 iPad is the "budget" model, so it looks like Apple isn't going to market a leather smart case. There aren't many new cases/sleeves out there right now, but there will be some good options soon.

I purchased an Apple Smart Sleeve on auction for $15; since the size is uniform over all iPad models, it's going to fit. I'm waiting for some vendor to come up with a carbon skin - someone like SlickSkins or Bodyguardz. This combo will be long-lasting, and even better-looking than the leather case. (If that's possible.)

A little bird promised that the new carbon skins will be out in a month or so.

Get any iPad Air 1 case, it will fit just fine. That is what I use on my iPad. Apple cases for iPad are a total rip off anyway, so I dont mind the fact they dont make cases for the new iPad

Most, but not all, of the original Air cases seem to fit. You can get some great deals for these on clearance.

I know I really don't get why there are no case options available. My Air smart cover works fine, but my Air back cover I'm using the buttons don't line up right, so it's a short term solution for me.

I got an air 1 otterbox case. It fits but not all the buttons are lined up like the volume buttons and you cannot use the fingerprint scanner. I got a good deal on it so I was okay with it but I will get a better case in the future when they roll out.

Does anyone know if the apple leather case will work? worried about the mute switch ?
The leather case for the Air 1? I have it, it fits. But the volume controls are shifted and rather hard to use. I'm going to take an X-acto knife to the button opening, soon.

i had an Air one case and it works, the key is having the area around the volume area open and not closed

I'm not sure that the 2017 iPad being the "budget" model makes any difference as for as Apple making a leather case. Apple didn't make a leather case for the 12.9 iPad pro's either. It certainly wasn't a budget model. I personally hate the Apple options for the 12.9. Just have to live with them though.

Here's an Air 1 Smart Case I got (new) from eBay for about $14.

I cut out the buttons with an X-acto, and finished it off with a Dremel. It was probably better left as-is? I cannot change the buttons by "feel", because they sit too low within the case. So, assuming you were going to have to look at the up vs. down button you wanted to press, you could leave it original.

Thank you! I guess it is not worth buying one only to cut it. Hopefully their is some nice looking folios coming out or I will be stuck with cheap amazon cases for now

Well in the option of cheap Amazon case with proper cut-outs, vs. OEM case with (only) goofy button cutouts, I prefer the Apple solution every time. The quality is amazing.

The options are limited right now, but the ESR Series (Urban and PU leather) fit perfectly, and are actually slightly thinner than my beloved Apple black leather case. The price (at $12 to $15) is quite reasonable, and the case seems pretty hardy.

I purchased a Bear iPad 2017 case from Amazon. The price was good and it is supposed to be leather. It is similar to one I have for my iPad Mini 2 that I have had for years.

Bear iPad Case

Everything is accessible and the sleep function on open/close works properly. It is worth consideration.

I am thinking about buying an iPad Air 2 Case for my 2018 iPad and cutting out the volume button leather. Did this work well for you, long term?

Air 2 case won’t fit the 5th/6th gen iPads. You need an Air 1 case.

Yes this has worked for me, however the access to the volume buttons is not ideal, as they’re still rather recessed.

Still ticked off that Apple did not offer the silicone case for the 10.5, only the cover. Looks like that is all they will offer on the new iPad.

I really liked the silicone case!:(

Yes me too. Apple used to offer great cases but now they only sells leaves and front covers.

Thanks for the info! I’ll try to find an air 1 cover (apple doesn’t sell it anymore). Aren’t the volume buttons a bit hard to access with the fotting smart case as well though? I always found that with my smart case for the iPad mini.
[doublepost=1522414829][/doublepost]The silicone back cover won’t work with the 2018 iPad either right? It must be thinner.

Right. You need to find Air 1 cases/covers/backs. Which, last time I checked, are a bit harder to find. Especially Apple OEM ones. There is a small mismatch on the top mic and camera hole, but not enough to impact functionality.

One of the best case options I ever found for the 2017 was this one: https://www.rhteen.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=rhtn_prod101470&src=rel

Real quality leather, with perfect cutouts for the 2017/2018 iPads. It doesn't automatically put the display to sleep, but it feels like a $50++ case, even though it's on clearance.
