I understand Apple's motivation - I think dropping the number would have been better on the next update.

What the new iPad really is about is the screen. Where people get disappointed or confused is that many expected the upgrade to be more than just the screen and the processor dedicated to supporting the resolution. All you have to do is look at numerous postings on this board to confirm that.

In markets outside of the US, Apple has now had to go back to consumers and offer refunds because they did not make it clear that the 4G frequency that the new iPad supports is only available in the US. Putting the emphasis on the screen (HD) could have probably avoided some confusion.

I'm sorry but this was such an awful attempt at trying to string together logical arguments.

It wouldn't make sense to you because, as your name shows, you're a graphics geek but to the average consumer it would make perfect sense, especially considering the exponential jump in resolution.

No, I'm a graphic designer. If the iPad 2 can play 720p HD movies then the HD moniker wouldn't make sense on the new iPad.

Ummm, no. 1024x768 is not HD. 1280x720 is HD. So is 1920x1080. So NONE of the iPads are HD, technically. :D

Went over your head?

Technically all the iPads are HD. 720p HD but still considered HD. So, no, iPad 2HD would not have made sense.

It could have also been another extension of iPad2 like IPad2X (for A5X processor)

My simple meaning is that the new iPad was mainly an upgrade on the resolution.

Disclosure - I think it is a big upgrade - I went from iPad2 to new iPad and thought it was a worthwhile upgrade, but except for the screen which is awesome, its still pretty similar to the iPad2.

Yes and if you look back at the iPad 2 launch people complained that there wasn't a retina display and that it should have been called the iPad 1.5 because it was just faster and thinner with useless cameras. Likewise for every iPhone released.

The truth is that this iPad is probably one of the largest feature updates Apple has ever done for an iOS device. If this "isn't enough", then we may never see such a device. Honestly, what major new feature can they bring out with the next one that is going to make people go "WOW" the way a retina display has? I can think of nothing.

The emphasis is on the screen. Every commercial, every video, the front of Apple's website, and the marketing materials in store all boast about the Retina Display above and beyond all else. Even in the US, I haven't seen anything from Apple what 4G wireless.

This had nothing to do with the way the iPad has been marketed, the issue is that those people can select to buy a 4G iPad and there is no mention that this is a US only feature.
