I feel like I'm forever chiming in with this but you should check with your credit card company as to whether they offer coverage for purchases. Some do and usually for 90 days post-purchase. Worth looking into.

As long as the OP doesn't go into the Apple store and make outrageous demands or makes up a story then its up to the store personnel to make this decision--not you. Though I have a feeling you get off on making judgments.

Well since the OP is posting here he has a right to express his opinion whether you like it or not.

I do agree with him, it's not the companies responsibility to give out replacements because of lack of care.

Crap happens, its part of life. At one point do you draw the line at what justifies a replacement and what doesn't?

I've dropped my phone in the tub before, I definitely wouldn't expect a company to reimburse me for my stupidity.

How about letting my little boy use my iPad and he drops it. Do I expect a replacement because HE dropped it and it was out of my control? No.

A little bit off the subject and not specifically directed at the OP but people in general..
There are far too many people that can't take responsibility for their own actions, it's always someone else's fault. Government seems to think that way too by thinking about banning/reducing dosages Tylenol because of the stupidity of the users not paying attention or using it for suicide. It's the drugs fault, not the users.

Are you suggesting that the OP shouldn't even *ask* for a replacement? As long as the OP is honest then whether Apple decides to replace it for free or not is their own business decision. I doubt the OP will get one, but I don't see the harm in asking.

There seems to be some political undercurrent to your references to "personal responsibility". This is an iPad we're talking about and the OP isn't a socialist, so calm down.

How new is your new iPad? You might try calling and putting applecare+ on it if you're within your 30 days. I know they say they need you to bring it into store, but I was able to do it on the phone.

You're suggesting the OP try to get coverage after the fact, then have someone else pay the price for his/her own carelessness?

Whatever happened to ethical behavior?

I don't think the damage is that bad. If I couldn't legitimately get it replaced/repaired I'd just put a case on it and live with what it is.

Are you for real?!

You broke it you fix it.

Why should Apple give you a free replacement ?!

Right. How would that be fair to those of us who purchased a warranty (AGAINST ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE) with our devices?

YOU could have bought the warranty just like me. You didn't. Pay up.

Do you download music or movies or ANYTHING you're not supposed to?

How about free porn?

I'm pretty sure EVERYONE, regardless of if they think they are or not, is a surveyor of pirated goods. And if you are, you can get off your ethical high horse.

If he can PAY for the Applecare+ service without having them look at the iPad, and then PAY for a replacement, there is nothing wrong with that.

Get over yourself.

Nope, I've never downloaded movies, music, software or anything else I'm "not supposed to" (whatever that phrase means). Piracy is theft. As to porn, I've no interest in exploitation.

If you break something valuable and it's not covered by insurance, it's your responsibility to pay for the repair if you want it fixed. A hard lesson to learn, but one that (hopefully) won't be forgotten.

To buy insurance coverage after the fact is dishonest and conceivably could be classified as insurance fraud.

Apple's pretty clear about how to buy AppleCare:

How to get AppleCare+
You have 30 days from your iPad purchase to buy AppleCare+.
There are two ways to buy from Apple:

From the Apple Online Store: When you order the new iPad or iPad 2, you'll have the option to add AppleCare+ to your cart before you check out.

At an Apple Retail Store (if AppleCare+ is purchased separately from iPad, a Genius Bar appointment, inspection of the iPad, and proof of purchase are required).

I've no problem with my personal standards. You may want to re-examine your own.
