Well if you are talking about why the growth has been as spectacular in the past few years then international growth is the reason. Apple only recently started to market internationally compared to the other tech giants (most hardware are located in Asia so they had that presence). There is so much untapped potential in China and some other markets its crazy to think about.

Certainly, but they've had their presence in the US and have been growing non-stop here too (even before they expanded to Verizon and Sprint). Growth has a lot to do with it, but that's not the only reason they're so successful. Why would any analyst be so baffled by their growth if the only reason was a greater global presence? Seems pretty obvious to me, and should be to them.

If the new one didn't break the sales record, that would've been a worrying sign. But we'll see how well they sold in terms of figures. Meanwhile I just...have to do with iPad 2.

I wonder if some of their supply issues have been solved by switching displays to Samsung.

Apple did not "switch" displays to Samsung. Samsung has been making iPad displays since the first one in addition to LG, and CMI for iPad 2.

I will guess 1 million sold through the weekend. Just a number out of A$$. But much higher than that seems hard to do even with ramped up manufacturing and a larger number of countries being sold to initially. Also, it is not a "must" upgrade from iPad 2. The tablet market is still fairly small and lots of people have not been convinced of its utility. iPad 3, once it gets out there, is going to help convince folks that they need a tablet. Apple doesn't want or need to sell to folks who own iPad 2. It wants, needs and expects to sell iPad 3 to folks who don't own a tablet or maybe they just own a kindle e-ink device or a nook. But those folks aren't necessarily going to be convinced by a keynote and fanboy page. They need to be convince by marketing (which began in earnest this weekend) and by word of mouth and seeing the tablet used by their friends (which began this weekend). I think the iPad 3 is going to sell strong for the next year, but to get to non-tablet owners at this point is going to take some time.

"Record weekend" is rather meaningless unless there are numbers attached to it. Obviously the original iPad or iPad 2 launch weekends and the "new" iPads cannot be perfectly compared b/c the latter two were U.S. only -- unless Apple is going to break out sales of the new iPad by country. It will be interesting how they account for the record breaking.

This launch should generate 6m units sold worldwide minimum for "record breaking" status and 8-9 on the high end. 5m would be acceptable. Under 4-5M is mediocre. Less than 4M is eek!

I think it depends on what they are calling sales. How many of the 240 my local BB got did they count? Did they count all 240 since BB bought them or did they count the 25 people in line Friday morning who bought them? I know they sold more than that, but they did sell all if them as even the 16GB WiFi is still in stock.

Dude, this isn't the Playbook.

Are they comparing apples to apples though? (no pun intended).
If they launched in more countries this time than last, then it would not be a fair comparison.

Good weekend but...

I think that the main reason for this record weekend is because they launched in more countries than ever before, likely with a higher initial quantity, 2 weeks of pre-orders when they didn't even have one day of pre-orders for the iPad 2, and a larger existing customer base.

While all of these are nice, I don't feel like there are enough changes in the iPad 3 for a prolonged period of major growth. I can't wait for Apple to release a lighter and thinner iPad, even if its smaller. Lighter, thinner, and longer battery life would cause an absolute explosion on sales.

I've bought before (iPads 1 & 2) -- but this time I decided the wife and I didn't need to share anymore and got 2 of them on Saturday. We were prepared to leave the store disappointed with a "we're out of that model", but the Apple said "We have every model in stock". $2100 later we left the store.

2 - 64GB Black; Verizon 4G LTE; 1 blue smart cover; 1 red smart cover; 2 AppleCare+ Coverage; 1 huge credit card bill!

Fortunately, we're getting $2200 back from Uncle Sam on our taxes. Thanks, Sam!

25 more countries are ready to set a new weekend record worldwide.

Interestingly enough, no news on them.

You actually made money! :D

3 Million?

I'm guessing 2 million. They sold 4 million iPhone 4S in the first weekend, as part of first quarter sales of 37 million. They sold 15 million iPads in the same quarter (about 1.1 million per week). So 2 million wouldn't surprise me.

As a said a few posts earlier, we bought iPads this weekend ...

... AND...

... a month ago, my wife had accidentally dropped and cracked her iPhone 4S. As we had AppleCare+ on it, we had it replaced as well. Now, this was great, it came with a bonus! They said because it was a Single crack and not a smashed screen and it had not been immersed in water, they just replaced it for FREE and didn't charge us the $50 deductible! I suppose a smash screen or water damage sounds too much like someone wanted a new phone and ruined theirs on purpose while a single crack just shows that it was dropped and more likely a real accident.

It was like them giving us a new phone AND handing us a Fifty dollar bill! And because of this, I bought the Leather iPad Smartcover whereas I was only going to get a vinyl!

Yep. I think projections are around 50-60 million this year, which works out to about 14-15 million a quarter or 4-5 million a month. 2 million in the launch weekend wouldn't surprise me either.

Insane figures. I wonder, if someone is buying an iPad to replace an older model, what do most do with their older devices? This always bothered me with iPhones. I always sold mine unlocked or gave them away, I'd hate to think people would throw them away

Just got mine today :D A new iPhone 4s arrived today as well..

I am dictating this from my brand-new iPad which of course is cool and leads too much longer replies

My wife needed an iPad as well and I gave iPad 1 to her.

Wow, 5M would just be ok? The 4s sold 4M during launch and ended up at 30M in Q1 (37M for total but that include the 3GS, 4). And I don't think anyone thinks iPad sales will match iPhone sales yet.

As several others have commented, 2M is probably the like key figure assuming we are projecting 55-60 for the year. Don't forget that there could be a increase for the iPad2 as well due to the price decrease.

The number for iPads in Q2 reports will be interesting. The first 10 weeks will be very slow due to after holiday quarter plus most was anticipating the new iPad.
How much ground did the new iPad and the cheaper iPad2 make up in the final two weeks.

Great. Now release the new MacPro already...

Has intel invented a new worthwhile CPU for it?
Had AMD/NVIDIA invented decent GPUs for it?

Don't yell at Apple for this. Yell at the others for not inventing the parts Apple need fast enough.

Where I live, all five BB retail locations are completely sold out of every model, and none are available online. So I guess however many BB got across the city, they could be considered to be sold.
