Hi all, I was just given an iPad Mini as a birthday present.

I wasn't expected it at all and I've never owned one before so I don't know what to do first. Can anyone help me? Where can I go for ideas?

Thanks!

Well... you can... you know... use the ipad. But that's just an idea. Or you can use it as a mouse pad.

Happy birthday!
Assuming you have a Mac, I'd set up all email addresses on the mini. In addition, be sure to use the same Apple ID as your Mac and enjoy the synced Apple garden.
You will enjoy having it if your are a mobil kind of person. I do!

Well if it was me

I'd Set up my emails and messages, download a few books, maybe a couple of games, take a look at any podcasts I might fancy.

Then I'd just type best current iOS apps into google and see if there is anything I fancy.

Download a file explorer app from the app store and transfer any photos I might want on there from my PC.

You'll get used to it and find it's your go to for web surfing a lot of the time.

Do you have an iphone? If so, on your phone go to settings--messages--text message forwarding and turn it on. Under facetime turn on iphone cellular calls. This will allow you to receive all phone calls and messages directly on your ipad.

I'd like to read e-books on it, but I'm not into facetime or making movies. I'd love to do something geeky with it... what can I do?

Play games. Well first download all of Apple's app for productivity. iBooks should be preinstalled. Kindle works too. There are benchmarks apps if you want to do something geeky.

If you use Amazon.com, I'd download the Amazon book reading app, as well as Amazon's instant video app. I'd download simple note or a similar sort of app for taking notes that are synched to the cloud and always available. I'd download pdfexpert or something similar if you expect to be reading pdf documents. I use dropbox for getting files onto my device. If your mini is LTE, I'd download google maps (some people prefer it to Apple's, some not).
