New iPad -- restore from iCloud

I just bought a new iPad mini retina. Do I restore from iCloud or iTunes? Well I only want my messages and pics from iPhone.

Or I should not restore anything for better performance/battery?

I always restore from iTunes, thou I've always staered my new iPads from new and have not tried to restore an ipad from an iphone backup. Guess im not much help, but I'd start from new if I were you.. I did. 🙂
