So perhaps there will be a way to lock the iPad in portrait or landscape. Interesting. I know there are some people who have been waiting for this.

I highly doubt that most people who are upset about the camera would have bought an iPad either way. Do you really believe that not having a camera staring up your nose is the deal breaker. I have a hard time even recognizing it as an omission since a camera makes so little sense in this form factor.

There's a lot of technological-challenged people that would benefit from having a video camera in the iPad for video chatting. This form factor is perfect for those people, especially with the easy to understand iPhone OS. The camera shake issues can be nullified by using a stand or something like that.

For example, my mother has no clue how to use a computer but yet she could understand how to navigate my iPhone well, hell my 4 year old nephew knows how to use it better than I do. The multi-touch with standard GUI and the App Store is easier for people to handle than keyboard/mouse with applications that look different everywhere with several different options not to mention the lack of central location for applications on computers/laptops/netbooks.

Agreed, this is the perfect form factor for a video chat device. Since your eyes will be pointed at the screen, the camera won't be "looking up your nose." Since this is the perfect device for lots of business travelers who might like to stay connected to home or the office, a camera would have been nice."

I hope this isnt the case. On a side note, I think its so stupid they didnt include a USB port on this thing. One port for an item like is so liming. I guarantee the majority of the people here love being able to use their laptop while having their iphone/ smartphone plugged in.

The only reason I feel that they arent adding a camera is to give them another incentive for someone to buy the next round of them.

You can buy a usb port for it...

I for one do not like to talk to people nose hairs...

And do you really think they didn't test the iPad with a camera. I am will to bet money they tested it with a camera and found the results to be unsatisfactory.

The Apple one? Yeah, that only lets you download pictures.

If Apple had put a USB port on this thing, then what would you plug into it? Devs would have to make an app for it as there aren't any drivers. But there is something that can already do this! The dock connector is USB, but hardly any devs have written anything for it. Probably true if the iPad had a USB, but since it's bigger than an iPhone maybe some devs will finally take advantage of 3.0! Though most things are going wireless now. For instance, my iPhone prints to me Canon printer over WIFI using a Canon app.

You seem to be suggesting using an iPad as desktop replacement. Frankly this is a better argument for a full size Desktop/Laptop adopting the iPhone OS UI, then it is for a webcam in the iPad.
For better or worse Apple is not marketing the iPad as a replacement for your Desktop/Laptop.
The iPad is designed to be hand held and mobile. Tossing a webcam into that paradigm does not work well. Even your example recognizes the need to go outside of the included form factor to properly utilize a camera.
The iPad will require a separate machine and by and large that already has a webcam. Video conferencing works better at a desk (despite the UI).
If you expect the device to be something that it was not intended for, you will be disappointed.

There will be a 3rd party camera, and Apple will wait to see how popular it is before adding a built-in camera in a future model.

Neither the iPod Touch or the iPad will get a camera till the AT+T exclusivity ends on the iPhone. The iPhone revenue stream from AT+T is too good.

Rotation lock. OK. My app already has this, by only operating in one orientation.

I'm intrigued by the picture above - Bezel recalibration???

Does that mean that the rumoured touch sensitive Bezel is coming? Is that why the Bezel is so wide?

Using the Bezel for scrolling or OSX dock-like manipulation could be great (if you didn't accidentally use it while simply holding the device - on/off setting? select which of the four side bezels are active?).

Or imagine pinch and zoom on a picture without having to cover the picture with your hand to do it...

Bring it on!

They didn't steal anybody's work without permission, nor do they need to seek permissions from Delicious Monster of which I think is just being ridiculous. While it may sound like I'm defending Apple here, I'm just saying it's unreasonable and illogical to say Apple copied from Delicious Monster when there were a lot of applications that used the Wood bookcase theme as well. We might as well say Delicious Monster stole their design from somebody else, hell we could just say Delicious Monster stole their design from Staples since they use wood bookcases.

In fact, in was the same guy who designed Delicious Library in the first place and the iPad bookshelf:

So you are suggesting that eyes don't move and only focus on objects directly in front of them. If you held the iPad directly in front of your face, you wouldn't have problem, but that would be tiring and the moment you lowered it, you probably wouldn't crane your neck enough to line your face up perfectly with the camera. There would be plenty of up the nose shots, but my real question is: If video chat is such a big deal, why isn't everyone using it?

For me, a web cam falls under the "it would be a nice feature, but I'm not going to miss it" category. Obviously some people do legitimately want a web cam, so it's unfortunate that the iPad doesn't have one, but most people won't use it. Someone could come up with a nice 3rd party case that had a web cam if there was sufficient demand though.

I have to agree, if the iPad had video chatting it would be simple enough and less "scary" to enough people that many people would feel very comfortable with it. I can think of LOTS of people that could benefit from having the ability to video chat on the iPad. From all kinds of people, stay at home parents, to professionals in the work place, from young people to the elderly,
from the person who's afraid to even pick up a user's guide to their DVD player, to the programmer who has enough troubleshooting and tech support in their daily life and just wants to use something simple in their off-time.

I am not commenting on this story. Prerelease software quite often has features disappear then reappear later. If I were talking about the operating system for a not yet released device, I would tell most people to chill.

This is most likely that last beta for 3.2 given the release timeframe. I doubt there will be any more changes even if they do release a last minute SDK.

Still not sure why anyone honestly believes there would be any "surprise" of any kind to be revealed between the ipad announcement and its launch. Seriously.

The only way this could happen, is that if Apple did not plan on having XYZ feature in the iPad when they announced it. Think about it. If you were running a company and had a great product with a cool feature, would you deliberately announce said product but not refer to the cool feature, then a month later just before launch go "oh man we really fooled you!" and announce the hidden secret? Where is the logic in that? Where? Seriously! It'd be like Ferrari designing a new car but leaving the doors off. Then, a week before the release, going "oh man, look it has doors now man that's awesome!". There just is no reason to do it if you're a sane and rational person, and even moreso when you're running a company aimed at making money.

The only conceivable way this would have happened is if they decided to implement the camera during the short time between the announcement and the launch. And since it's far too complicated to design in and implement a camera within that timeframe, it is NEVER going to happen.

The same goes for multitasking. If they really intended on having it in at launch, they would have at least known about it at the time of announcement. And again, if they knew about it then, there is no way they would not have made reference to it in the announcement speech.

That's not really true. While I wouldn't expect a change in hardware like a camera, some software changes could definitely happen (new apps, not OS changes). Developers are coding apps based on 3.2, so that is what we will get. However it is a perfectly reasonable strategy to add some small enhancements just prior to launch. "If you thought the iPad was great before, wait until you see what we added to it". If Apple was working on some beneficial, but non essential apps, they wouldn't necessarily show incomplete versions of them at the initial launch, or announce that they were coming (just in case they weren't finished in time). The initial launch built a lot of hype, announcing a couple new features late would simply add to that and if I'm not mistaken, the original iPhone had a late addition to it (I think it was google maps).
