This is why apple always has plenty of refurbs on hand. People are way to picky with their I devices. That scratch ain't hurting anything. I say live with it!

So you buy a brand new car and notice a pretty deep scratch on it while it's still on the lot. You would just leave and and drive home happy? You buy a brand new house and notice that there is a deep scratch in the marble countertop. You would just leave it and be happy? Now an iPad is not a new car our house but going by your way at looking at things those scratches are not hurting anything either.

a better comparison would be a scratch on the underside of the car, or a nick on the underside of the cabinet that no one sees. more power to the guy for getting a replacement, but there's plenty of people that wouldn't be bothered at all. That scratch is about the size of the 1/8" headphone jack..that's a bit different than a car with a big gouge out of the hood or door that would be easily seen every day. Lousy comparison.

That is not a better comparison. His scratch was in area which can easily be seen. It's not like it was hidden away somewhere. No one would be able to spot a scratch on the underside of a car before driving it off the lot unless you go underneath with a light and start looking. A scratch on the underside of a cabinet might not be noticed for months. There really is not many places a scratch can hide on an iPad.

FYI For those interested, I fell down a flight of stairs Sunday morning with my iPad 2. Needless to say it was dented up in a couple spots. Took it to Apple Store yesterday night, Genius replaced without any hesitation, gave me a brand new 64 GB wifi black out of retail box. Some stores may have replacement stock for those who are having problems with theirs. Genius said they have had stock specifically for replacements since day one, but have not had any available for retail sale.

Clearly this was your fault and clearly you were just lucky in getting a replacement, not likely to be an Apple policy for many. Personally, I think it was not something they should have done.

Apple does this to a fault. I've had friends get phones replaced where the damage was completely their fault but the Apple Store replaced them free of charge.
