Yes. Apple is shifting to randomised serial numbers starting this year. This was reported earlier this year in MacRumors

If you trade in a device with Apple or many other outfits they ask for a serial, from which they derive all they need to know. So I’m thinking that Apple will have at least a look-up table of those ‘randomised’ serials and be able to get device configuration etc. Other players might have difficulties.
