If they keep the same storage tiers and the iPad is a $400 1 to 2tb up charge, then it will be a $2000 phone. Pepperidge Farm remembers when the $1000 iPhone X was crazy price.

I’m legitimately asking and not trolling.

Why does someone need 2TB on their phone. Laptop sure. iPad ok fine. But phone? Really?

If you’re professionally shooting video or raw photos you’ll probably have an SSD anyway to transfer files.

If you just want all your music saved - Apple says 10 GB for 1000 songs lossless so 2TB, minus say 200 mg for system files and other things, is 180000 songs, which, for an average of 3.25 mins per song, is 585,000 continuous hours of music or just over 66 years; so even if you were going to Mars for a 1 year mission, you wouldn’t need that much storage for music.

Photos: figure 100 mb for an uncompressed RAW file? So that’s 180,000 photos. If you’re shooting live at 1 second per photo that’s 50 hours of photography. If you’re just looking at store photos, you’ll have 180,0000 photos to look at? Maybe more. Again that’s assuming you want all your photos locally and never use the cloud.

Videos: ok so you want to watch movies or tv shows or whatever. at 30 gb/hr of 4k video, 1800 gb gives you 60 hours of 4K HD porn videos. I would submit that if you’re bringing your phone for a space mission or long camping trip, maybe bring your iPad for a larger screen instead? and if I were going to space, I’d probably bring a few SSDs with 1000s of hours of videos to entertain myself and the crew and they wouldn’t just live on my phone.

So in all seriousness, please. Someone help me understand why 2TB is needed on a phone?
Easy: 4K Dolby Vision Video Recordings, Spatial video recording, and Raw photos will quickly eat up that much space and more during creative endeavors

My photos and videos are over 1 TB. If I want to back those up to another cloud storage service like OneDrive or Amazon Photos I need to have the full resolution copies stored locally. At least the last time I checked, the services would not first download the full copy so you’re backing up a lower resolution photo. This is with iCloud Optimize Photos enabled of course.

It‘s a much smoother experience to browse photos and videos if they are local.

I‘ve never tried to skimp on video quality due to storage on a modern iPhone. I lived through the days of low quality videos and photos because storage was cost prohibitive. I’m not going back. Trips are expensive. Memories are priceless. Storage is a relative bargain to me at least.

The only time I download some media is when I go on vacation
Even then, you don't need much space. A reasonably high quality but compressed 4K HDR movie is 10-20GB. With a 100GB budget, you can have 12 hours of high-quality entertainment no problem. If you're willing to bump the quality down to 1080p, you can easily fit multiple continuous days of entertainment in that space.

My kids, who aren't quality snobs, do just fine with a 128GB iPad. I think I have every episode of Bluey, Daniel Tiger, Spidey and Friends, Octonaughts, and Paw Patrol (many hundreds of hours total) all at under 100GB with highly-compressed 720p quality. But for them, options and variety are more important than picture quality.

Frankly I love the idea of having my entire digital life (or at least, nearly all of it) on my phone, but I'd much prefer if the iPhone had a "DEX Mode" like Samsungs - so it can transform into a desktop when docked. And - even more crucial - getting data on and off the phone has to be less painful. Why in 2024 does the iPhone still not just appear as a removable drive when connected to a desktop?
Hmm do Android phones appear as drives when connected to a computer? If so, I’d be surprised if it was that simple. A phone is a computer, and when connecting two computers there’s always some extra thing you have to do to share the drive of one to the other. But personally, sync and Airdrop has been good for my file transfer needs. Also I could be wrong, but I believe you may now be able to drag and drop files using the new iPhone mirroring feature on macOS.

No easy battery replacement + the Apple tax for storage upgrades + the existence of external USB C drives = 2TB iPhones are ridiculous
It’s easy to pay for a battery replacement. It’s just that the value of that is subjective, as is the value of storage upgrades and the practicality of carrying around an external drive—some may say that is ridiculous.

Isn't it cheaper just to get iCloud? For me the more storage the more depreciation.
There are possibly multiple cheaper options, depending on one’s precise needs. But every option has its trade offs.
Personally, I don’t resell my phones, I use them for way too long for that.

I have and create a lot of data—media library, take photos/videos, create music, create video—and I want (personal) or need (work) to have constant access to it, and I don’t want to use cloud or streaming if I don’t have to, even if it costs me more to store it locally (which is not certain for total cost over time for very large amounts of data). Also sometimes I can’t store work files in the cloud. I avoid having to depend on cloud and streaming because I want as little of my data on a company’s server as possible; I really dislike lossy media, pixelation and buffering from slow connection, always slightly delayed skip and search; and favorite content is sometimes taken down from streaming services. And I often (enough) don’t have internet access, or good internet access, or I have to think about data caps and throttling. And I definitely do not want to always carry around another device to store data and connect/transfer each time. I’ll pay extra to avoid all this.

I cannot imagine what unholy mess their camera roll must look like. I’ve got about 15 gb of pics and videos on mine and it’s s nightmare to navigate.
My camera roll only dates back about 11 years, as at the time I had to delete everything from 2007 on in order to create space - something that thankfully isn’t a problem today due to higher capacity iPhones

Unfortunately there is no way to put back that data where it originally was. I only wish I could have my camera roll “complete” today like it could have been if larger capacity iPhones existed at the time.

Regardless, even with “only” 11 years in my camera roll, it is simple to find things because everything is in chronological order, as it happened. If I need to find a picture I took on a vacation in 2015, I know exactly where to scroll to.

The search is also very powerful especially considering it uses machine learning to identify people objects and text in the photos, as well as drawing from info in the EXIF like date and location.

I value having my data on-device and accessible to me. I will never not buy the largest capacity iPhone.

As someone who has always gone for the highest storage tier each time, I think 2TB will be the first one I pass on and go with just 1TB. I think 1TB is sufficient and see no reason to go higher.

If it is true that there will be a 2tb option I will go for it easily I use a lot of data and take a lot of photos and videos.

As Apple's iPhone 16 launch approaches, questions are swirling about a potential leap in storage capacity for the iPhone 16 Pro models. According to a January report, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will double their maximum storage to 2TB.

iPhone-16-Pro-Right-Side-Feature.jpg

This speculation stems from Apple's rumored adoption of Quad-Level Cell (QLC) NAND flash memory. QLC technology could allow Apple to pack more storage into a smaller space while potentially reducing costs compared to the current Triple-Level Cell (TLC) NAND.

However, it's crucial to approach these rumors with caution. Similar claims about 2TB options surfaced for both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro, which ultimately proved false. Yet despite this history, there are new factors that lend credibility to the latest 2TB rumors.

The iPhone 16 Pro models are reportedly set to receive significant camera upgrades that could justify the need for increased storage. Rumors suggest an improved ultra-wide camera with a 48-megapixel sensor, featuring the same pixel-binning technology as the main camera. This upgrade, combined with a wider f/2.2 aperture, promises substantially better low-light performance and support for 48-megapixel ProRaw photography.

Apple is also said to be introducing a new image format called "JPEG-XL." This addition to the existing lineup of HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRaw, and ProRAW Max formats could potentially result in larger file sizes, making increased storage more necessary. The rumored capability to shoot 3K video at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision on the Pro models would also generate significantly larger files.

Last but not least, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a dedicated "Capture Button" for the iPhone 16 Pro models, emphasizing the device's role as a serious photography and video capture device. Taken together, this collective push towards professional-grade image and video capabilities could justify the need for increased storage options.

While the prospect of a 2TB iPhone is exciting, especially for content creators and power users, it's important to bear in mind that QLC NAND does have drawbacks. Most notably, it typically offers slower read and write speeds compared to TLC NAND.
As we await official announcements from Apple during its upcoming "It's Glowtime" event on September 9, the possibility of a 2TB iPhone 16 Pro model remains an uncertain prospect. Whether this will be the year Apple finally breaks the storage barrier remains to be seen, but the combination of new hardware features and evolving storage technology certainly makes it a possibility. And if it doesn't happen, there's always hope for next year.

If the 2tb doesnt have 12gb of ram it's pointless

Higher storage option will be good for those who need it. Will be good if other models have TLC NAND chips.

One of the fastest growing revenue channels for Apple is services which includes iCloud.

Apple may not offer an increase of storage and will direct users to purchase a bigger iCloud storage account which would might be better for Apple financially.
In fact, I am 200GB away from running out of my 2TB iCloud storage plan, and counting. It’s terrifying how much storage I can end up using.
Despite this, I would say using QLC on a device that has an asking price of $2k is way over the top. Greed at its finest. You can bet Apple will charge an extra $1000 just for that (worse quality btw) 1TB of storage.

Other models better have TLC otherwise imma get super pissed. What the hell do they need 100% profit margin for?

is the upgrade for the main sensor with stacked technology and bigger aperture still a thing?

I dunno, man. I’m still clearing my 128GB phone off every 4-6 months and putting photo and video elsewhere in redundant backup locations

There you go. And mind you, this phone only has 30gb of photos/video. Actually I just finally went through my photo library and deleted things and moved to external HDD/backup because I was just shy of 15gb to full. Also erased around 30gigs just of imessage attachments.
Also Just deleted YouTube Music which that also was around 20-30gigs. Sometimes I download podcasts for studying later.

"Synced Media" is lossless music, and that's only very basic, like a majority of 2020-2021 albums and the rest classics that are not on streaming, it's fat from being my "entire library". Heck, if I was going out every night and shoot videos & pics like in 2010, then the 1TB phone would close enough as well.

I know I am a niche, but in circa 2020 when I noticed my streaming media subscriptions are over $1000/year, PER YEAR. including 1TB iClouds and after getting tired of buggy UIs, downloaded songs not working even when offline downloaded, albums disappearing due to licensing, I decided I had enough of streaming. All of a sudden a $1700 1TB iPhone didn't feel that expensive anymore, that you can keep for years and don't have to worry about monthly fees.
Ever since, I cannot emphasize enough how satisfying & "peaceful" to have your (personal) media locally and just savour a music album like in the iPod days.

As you can see, 80-100gbs is just apps, About says I have 237 apps. Sure, I don't use all of them, I've been using the same back-up dating back to my (first) iPhone 4, so things have been piling up.

Actually, I do not understand how people these days live with 128gb phones, when even basic apps take around 500MB-1gb.
Actually here is a 16gb 6S on latest supported 15.8.3 I have just restored yesterday to factory, a literally empty phone, WhatsApp has just 1 chat, no attachements, over 200MBs. So basically a 16GB iPhone is actually a 4GB iPhone 2G in 2024 lololz.

P.S. with large storage phones, you don't have to worry every month to delete things and babysit your phone like most of my friends do. It's again a peace of mind that's very welcomed (for me).

I’m redundantly backing things up as well, but that’s just what a backup is. A backup. It’s not the primary storage. Once something is off your phone’s camera roll you lose easy access to it, and there is no getting it back to where it came from.

2TB option is cool, but what I really want is for Apple to troll us by releasing a 64GB iPhone SE4 and then respond to the criticisms by saying it’s the most popular model of it (which also happens to be the cheapest).
