over half of the respondents (54.9%) indicated they would welcome even bigger iPhones
I genuinely do not understand the desire for larger phones. Granted I’m typing this from my iPad but, to want to carry such a large device around with you is difficult for me to understand. I think the biggest phone I had was the X. I’m more than happy with my Mini. Perhaps if I didn’t use my iPad as my main device I’d feel differently?

Same. Can't tell you how many times I get the "charging is paused until temperature decreases" even with the phone being in a shaded spot and AC running in the car.
If this is happening in Northern Hemisphere, just imagine the situation in tropical and hotter countries in the Asia and ME, SA etc..

None of the iPhones are close to size of an iPad, unless you are you using an iPad Mini.

Where did you get this 'extreme minority' idea from? It literally says right there in the article that the survey found "26.8% of users hoping for better thermal performance".
It’s all horsefeathers propagated on tech blogs by techie wannabes. So are all surveys about anything. It’s well known that most surveys are responded to by the negative types and that includes elections polling. Whenever I get a call from a pollster I hang up.

Ever wonder why almost 100% of tech blog posts are negative and complaining yet the company being complained about remains successful and prosperous (take Netflix for example)? This is especially true of Apple on tech blog forums. If 5% of the garbage posted was true Apple would have been out of business long ago.

My iPhone 15 Pro runs warm to hot has has since launch. Charging, GPS usage, camera usage, all result in the phone getting uncomfortably warm.

I don’t know about this survey per se, but the thermal design is a major reason I, personally, want to move from my 15 to the 16.

Even my friends who aren't really good with tech started complaining about their iPhone getting hot too often.

"The SellCell survey also revealed significant interest in Apple Intelligence capabilities for the ‌iPhone 16‌. A striking 82.1% of respondents expressed willingness to wait up to a month after release for the AI features to be fully implemented. How does it signal interest in Apple Intelligence exactly?

What’s the use of paying an extra premium for faster chipset if it throttles when using heavy load? Doesn’t sound premium to me but more as a flaw.

I agree - that's why I didn't buy one of these phones. I learned my lesson after Antennagate. I wait at least a few weeks for the real issues that the state media (I mean, reviewers) either whitewash or ignore altogether.

That said the main reason most users buy the Pro phones these days is because they're fashion accessories. Apple knows that.

Agree. I have a non max pro and that's about as big as I want it it go to be able to effectively use it one handed. I guess if you have huge hands the pro max and larger screen make sense but the pro seems like the perfect mix between one handed use and portability in hand and pockets.

I'm honestly shocked at the number of people in this thread who assume that because they don't have overheating problems nobody has overheating problems. Newsflash: often other people live in different climates and run different apps to you.

So the 17.9% who were not willing to wait are ...? insta-switching to Android?

Also no chance the average person has any understanding of the 'thermal design' of a smartphone. This survey doesn't sound real.

A recent survey conducted by SellCell suggests that a significant majority of iPhone users are planning to upgrade to the upcoming iPhone 16 series, with many expressing a preference for a better thermal design to prevent overheating issues.

The survey, which polled over 2,000 US-based iPhone owners (1,000 males and 1,000 females), found that 61.9% of respondents plan to purchase an iPhone 16 model upon release.

Competitive pricing emerged as the most crucial factor, with 30.9% of respondents citing it as the primary influence on their decision to upgrade. But it was improved heat management that turned out to be another key area of interest, with 26.8% of users hoping for better thermal performance to prevent overheating issues.

Shortly after the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max were released last September, some customers began to experience an issue with the devices overheating. Apple eventually mitigated the problem with an iOS 17 update, but iPhone 16 models are expected to be equipped with a new thermal design to address potential overheating.

A striking 82.1% of respondents expressed willingness to wait up to a month after release for the AI features to be fully implemented. Another intriguing finding was the interest in larger displays for the iPhone 16 series. Despite the current iPhone 15 Pro Max already boasting a 6.7-inch screen, over half of the respondents (54.9%) indicated they would welcome even bigger iPhones. The finding chimes with expectations that the iPhone 16 Pro models will have slightly bigger displays.

However, there was a notable gender divide on the issue of display size. The majority of men (62.1%) were in favor of larger displays, while women are more evenly split, with 47.8% expressing interest in bigger screens. Some female respondents cited concerns about handling and holding larger devices comfortably.

For those who said they won't be buying the iPhone 16, most people (34.2%) cited the expense as the reason, closely followed by people who won't invest because they are keeping their existing phone (34.1%).
Apple is expected to announce its new iPhone 16 lineup next month at an event that could take place on Tuesday, September 10, although Apple has not yet provided official confirmation of the date.

It's been a want for YEARS. The devices have been getting hot while charging/using for years and don't do a good job removing said heat from the battery.
My previous iPhone, the Xs max, did get warm in multiple circumstances.
Man it is always amazing to see how many blindly defend apple even with their design/product is flawed. Hope Apple sends you all a nice check every month for defending them no matter what.
I get a nice check every month. Pays for a yearly upgrade. ;)
My 15 Pro gets uncomfortably hot when connected to CarPlay. And CarPlay is trivial to drive.
I don’t have that issue with CarPlay on my 15PM.

What a load of garbage. SellCell? Who are they? Can’t believe you folks take these outfits seriously. Literally never heard anyone complaining about their iPhone overheating.

Thermals have seemingly been a problem for years.

With my iPhone 13 Pro, for example, I can’t use the phone outside in direct sunlight during the months of May through September for more than about two minutes before iOS automatically ramps down the maximum allowed brightness to the point that the screen is almost unreadable. iOS doesn’t seem to allow the actual maximum brightness to be utilized again until the phone cools off.

It defeats the purpose of using the phone outside in direct sunlight for a sizable chunk of the year.

Some female respondents cited concerns about handling and holding larger devices comfortably.

So...size does matter.

Think it's a smart move to redesign the thermal components, but, on the other hand, you feel it when you left your flashlight or your camera on while it's pocketed.
That's weird. Online at least, it's common knowledge that women prefer bigger phones. It might be just a stereotype though not sure. But, I always thought that it may be because women always have a purse, and usually hold phones with both hands, which makes the size of the phones irrelevant to their daily lives, but a net positive for the extra battery life.

The users positing "no one asked for better thermals" are the same who lament the jet engine fans of Intel lap warmers, as it's not enough to curb the heat. I have thermal issues on my 15 Pro, and would welcome any improvement. As someone who doesn't partake in mobile gaming or social media, where one may expect higher temperatures, you can imagine the frustration of inability to hold your phone for simple tasks. No case trapping heat either.

I believe the point is when a supposedly random universe is presented a poll for new features and one of the top one is thermal management, it sounds like a setup. That’s not to say better thermal management isn’t wanted but I can think of multiple things I would request before better thermal management one of the requests being bring back Touch ID.

You're absolutely right, I'm mainly surprised at how many responses behave as if the survey didn't allow for two choices of the given options. Or as if Apple can't introduce better thermals alongside better battery, etc.
...but I can think of multiple things I would request before better thermal management one of the requests being bring back Touch ID.
I'm going to assume the survey only had the options below. Of this selection, thermals would be #1 for me personally.

Q1_-Select-the-MOST-IMPORTANT-rumored-upgrades_factors-that-would-encourage-you-to-buy-an-iPhone-16_-Select-2-features.png

On the other hand, the survey may have additional options not listed in their data, which may include TouchID. The continued success of iPhones that ditched TouchID long ago and its omission in this data insinuate most users aren't awaiting its return.

I'd be interested to see a more thorough survey. I mean, I'm surprised the vertical camera lens option exists here. I'd say most users would prefer removal of the camera bump altogether, if not a horizontal camera bump to stop the wobble.
