Is there a way to go back to the old bars?

Does the appearance of the bars really make that big of a functional difference to you? My phone works just fine with the new bars and I actually know the true signal strength of the area I'm in. I don't understand what makes them "ugly". They look like bars to me.

Maybe my son stands a chance of getting one without the update.

So let me get this straight; Your never going to update your iPhone 4 beyond iOS 4.0?

I've got a factory unlocked 3Gs that's running 4.0.1 and I've got a number for the signal strength, no bars :D

I like the number a lot better then the bars.

I completely agree. I wish this was an option in the settings. I guess it's their way of keeping us from knowing too much.

I bought one yesterday, and it was on 4.0. So, I think there's a good chance.

The appearance of many things on the phone don't make a functional difference though, but they are still preferred and are some of the reasons that compel people to choose an iPhone over another phone. Though being bothered by the bars being slightly taller in a tiny part of the phone is kind of OCD.

Since they don't fix anything I can't see why you'd want them.

This post has now proved to me that we can really complain about anything if we try hard enough. Really, does it matter what the bars look like?

How can slightly changing the hight of 2 of 5 bars cause them to go from good looking to ugly?

I actually prefer the new look of the bars, but seriously, this is ridiculous.

I can't even tell the difference. You need a pretty shallow life to notice that.

They also fixed the issue of not connecting to an exchange server timeout in 4.0.1. so whoever uses the iphone in an enterprise environment should have the 4.0.1. update.
