Its missing the silver ring to make it flush with the body. Last year when I purchased my iPad mini it looked like that and I took it in to Apple and they swapped it out with a good model.
Its not recessed, its just not complete.

I think that is only because of the strange colour combo- I think the white front panel is meant to go with the silver backing. This one should have the space grey backing. I guess only September will tell.
Definitely the white back with a black front.
However, it's more than just the material, it's the proportions and case design.
The 3G(S) had a rounded back; The iPhone 1 (and 6) has a flat back. The sides are rounded more like the iPhone 1 than the 3G.
And yes, the all-metal back certainly helps it harken back to the iPhone 1.
I really hope they release a Black & Silver combination. Not only would it pay homage to the original iPhone, it would also match the design of the Macbook Pro.

It's hard to tell proportions when taking macro shots like this, you don't get a sense of scale.
It's important to note that Feld and Volk's images still depict unfinished iPhone 6 parts that are in rough condition, and Apple's completed device will undoubtedly look even more polished.

I dont think either, I think he is referring to just the bad quality of the actual phone in the images, clearly its got defects along with missing components. Its most likely not the polished product and thats what he is probably referring to.
I am pretty sure someone just put the wrong parts together because its what they had. It isn't powered on, I imagine they have the black screen which will come on the space grey model put on the white/silver back. This looks neat but I really don't think it's an actual model that is coming.
