Wait a sec, I have not heard about any Blackberry data plan exclusion. Why would you not be able to keep the unlimited plan for that one phone, but all other smart phones AT&T offers? Phone racism?!

Something about that CNET article is irking me. They might have their facts wrong (I sure hope they do.)

Huh? This is contradictory to what I've seen AT&T telling people, including me, on their Facebook page.

If you don't already have an iPhone with an unlimited plan, then it is true. But it isn't true if you have an iPhone plan and upgrade.

If you have ANY smartphone with an unlimited plan you are grandfathered in.

FWIW to all those VZW customers (like me) who are considering switching this weekend to get the grandfathered unlimited data plan, here is what an AT&T sales rep just told me over the phone: If you buy the 3GS now and plan to trade it in for the 4G when/ if it comes out within 30 days (under their regular return/ exchange policy), you can freely exchange it but you will have to switch to the new tiered data rates because you will essentially be re-signing your 2 year contract on that day- essentially excluding you from the unlimited data and negating the whole reason to switch before the 7th. Seems we're damned if we do and damned if we don't. I hope AT&T's rep could be mistaken, though he said he's been talking to customers and potential customers all day about this issue and he seemed fairly knowledgeable and helpful. Somewhat reassuring for my first time to ever need customer service from them but definitely not the answer I wanted to hear.. He did confirm that existing customers who are UPGRADING are totally grandfathered and have nothing to worry about but new customers are pretty much screwed already if they want unlimited data + 4G iPhone. ARRRRGH! This decision is frustrating and making my brain hurt. I shouldn't have to agonize this much over a dad-gum cellular plan.. Oh well, maybe I'll just say screw it and wait it out on VZW for up to another year. I guess I'll know by tomorrow night.

I don't really have a problem with the data plans, but I do have a problem with the phone plans for the iPhone, I personally don't need a phone plan, I know it sounds ridiculous not having a phone plan with a phone, but I want an iPad-like plan, I only want 3G for my iPhone.

I purchased a new 3GS yesterday with the unlimited plan and my sales rep said exactly what Berglnar was told. I even asked when I upgrade phones (I don't plan on getting a 4g anytime soon) after I am upgrade eligible again (maybe 5G) will I be affected. He said no, in fact he has never seen AT&T take away a plan from anyone as long as they keep paying and they want to keep the plan.
My first iPhone and I'm jazzed! This phone is fun to play with and my grandson called and can't wait to get ahold of it with it's unlimited data plan. :)

Just to point out the obvious here, but Verizon (and probably Sprint) will follow suit with AT&T and create similar plans for their phones in a month or so. Most mobile carriers have a "follow the leader" mentality.

Verizon or Sprint don't play follow the leader that's AT&T's thing.

iChat will use tons of data!

Maybe I'm crazy but if the new iPhone has iChat capability then it will surely use a lot more data. If you switch to the 2gb plan when you upgrade you'll get an unpleasent surprise when you use that cool iChat video conferencing and in a matter of days get a message saying you've reached your limit. I would definitely stick to the unlimited plan!;)

Don't worry. We've had video calling for years, and next to no one uses it. I can't see this changing just because it's on the iPhone, so you'll probably find it a little to never used feature anyway.

This is what I've been told and I'm holding them to it. I'll get my unlimited plan even if I have to be in there allllll day.

EDIT: Just logged onto Facebook and this what AT&T's comment was and I quote:

"We’re still getting a lot of questions on the data plans for NEW customers. We want to make sure everyone is clear. Current smartphone customers who like your unlimited plans do not have to switch to one of the new plans. Even if you’re upgrading to a new device or signing a new contract. After June 7, new smartphone customers will be able to choose between the new plans. Details are here: http://srm.vitrue.com/igu"
