Answer: No

A physical button would make the phone shake even more and blur the photo.

But here's the trick with the on-screen camera button.
When you've entered the camera application:
- HOLD the camera button
- When you're ready to take the picture, let go

This trick reduces 'blurriness'

Uh, yeah. That doesn't help.

If I'm holding the phone with one hand I can tap the button gently, but I can't release it without shaking the phone.

This setup actually makes my one-handed photos MORE shakey.

In dark areas you just have to use 2 hands, end of story.

Just slide your finger off the button. What's the big deal with using 2 hands. Where is it written that your phone must take fabulous photos using 1 hand? Just hold the thing with 2 hands if you want your pictures to come out better, end of story.

No physical button for me; I just got the hold the screen button down then release it when I'm ready to take the picture. I've been taking the photo while locking my arms to my sides and taking the pic while resting against something......:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

Another good tip, indeed. Rest your elbows, arms, wrists, whole body, or better yet the actual phone itself on something whenever possible for the clearest shots.

The on-screen button is fine for me. I'd actually prefer if the phone didn't have a camera at all, then I wouldn't have to worry about putting fingerprints on it.

You don't know my two brothers, do you?:eek::eek::eek::eek::p:p:p:p:p:p

They carry around Super Telephoto lenses too

Anyways, best not get this topic too off track... Perhaps Apple should allow the user to set functions for each of the physical buttons, much like the home button. Such as being able to set the volume buttons function differently in different applications.

I voted no: to keep consistency across the device as much as possible, even if the button right next to the home button seems a little weird.

If we could just use the volume buttons at the shutter, everybody wins.
When I was jailbroken the camera app called Snapture had this feature, as well as tapping anywhere on the screen, which was good for self shots.

I'll take that bet.

iBookG4user, what is the approximate combined value of the items listed in your signature. Just curious.

Somewhere in the range of $15,000. I may be off by a bit because I'm half asleep, but it should be a fairly accurate basis.

I fully agree, I wonder if such an app could be written that would allow you to repurpose the actual buttons for each individual app.

With my design for the new iPhone with improved camera (hardware & software), video, and front iChat camera, the button problem is no more!

Simply tap the preview in the top right corner and it flips the camera from back to front or visa versa like the album art work in the iPod, then you will never have to hold your camera backwards to take a pic of yourself again! :D

Yes, because I would like to see physical buttons for several more things. Obviously we like the touch screen buttons that the iPhone has right now, but there are several features that we want QUICK access to, and physical buttons are a must for such features. In the same way that there is a switch for "silent," a switch for location services (GPS) on and off would be excellent!

A switch to reduce screen brightness to minimum would be great for movie theaters and sitting in your car at night. :)

Physical and Virtual both have their strong and weak points. I voted virtual because the iPhone is basically a full touch screen phone.

I don't think the iPhone was meant to really take pics.

As for non-full touch screen phones, like the Omnia, that's different.

There are dozens of Apps that resolve this. Unfortunately the biggest weakness is saving to the Camera Roll takes 5x longer than the built-in App.

ProCamera and Real Cam SP

There are apps as seamless as Apple's that allow me to press anywhere on the screen? Those 'shake-free' accelerometer apps are useless if they're what you're on about?

The fact this thread is taking place tells me there's something wrong.

key word: reduces.

It should NOT be present at all.

Exactly. If you look at the poll up top, there is approximately a 50%/50%. Translation: Something is wrong. 50% of your customers are Not happy with the current method.

To me, with the current [small] touch camera button, it is in such an awkward place when trying to hold a camera and hold the camera steady, that it ergonomically CONTRIBUTES to camera shaking when trying to take a picture.

Suggested solutions:
Solution 1: Make the entire touch screen the "shutter" button.
Solution 2: Add a physical camera button or make the volume buttons "shutter" buttons when in camera mode.
(heck, they could even enable both options; giving the user a choice in different scenarios)

I don't care what Apple does, JUST DO SOMETHING!!!

Uh...what? A 50-50 split suggests that half your customers will be unhappy no matter what you do. That means Apple should not make this particular decision based on customer response.

PS: I have a physical camera button on my Tilt, but using it caused the camera to shake even more than the touch-screen.

be careful what you wish for. ;) I have a Nokia with a dedicated camera button and it blows so hard I can't wait to rent a steamroller to drive over it as soon as my contract is over (when I get an iphone).

So you want a physical button so you can take sharper pictures? that means the button can't be hard to push, which means it goes off in your pocket or if you pick the phone up wrong or look at it funny. And if you have that button also launch the camera app then you can be assured it will be on 24/7 until the battery runs out. But I'm sure Apple would be smarter than that.

Not Nokia (now I'm going to blow off some steam so you can stop reading). No, they went a step further in stupidity. This is a flip phone and the shutter button starts the app with the flip closed! And it takes pictures closed, mostly all black since it is in your pocket. It gets worse! There is *no* way to turn off the ***** camera without opening the flip and pushing a menu button! I called Nokia seeking a simple firmware update to resolve this. They understood my complaint but refused to do anything about it. I will never own another Nokia.

They could reengineer the Home button power button combo when in camera app - instead of taking a picture of the screen, it takes a camera picture.

No need for extra buttons.
