True.it's late to do 2 different events
It's a little early to get on that bandwagon. We could have an event next week for the iPods and another one in October for the iPhones. Let's just wait and see. I do agree it is getting late but invites could go out Friday- we will know then.

i have t agree :D

Hmm

From the front page.. https://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/07/fresh-claims-of-3g-capable-ipod-touch-in-development/

This is starting to make some sense to me. If the Touch has 3G then it is a natural to offer it at the same event as the iPhone. This makes iCloud available everywhere also. Updating the Touch with 3G is something I have been asking for since Gen1. This could change everything for the Touch, anybody else think one of the new "iPhones" is actually a 3G Touch?
Maybe that explains why there have been so few Touch parts leaked - they get called new iPhone parts. Just speculating but that's what we do here.

One more thing...

They introduce one of the two products, with the usual rigamarole, and are winding down the event... when, almost as an aside, Tim Cook says, "One more thing..."

A pale, gaunt Jobs comes out to a standing ovation. That goes on and on...

In his hand is the new iPod Touch 5G or iPhone 5 or, even better, under his arm is...

a 7" mini-iPad that will directly pull the rug out from under Amazon's forthcoming tablet!

The place goes wild; pandemonium. Steve says, "This is just amazing" one more time. It becomes a personal tribute to the man.

"Are they really going to let phones on their network where the burden of entry is an iPad type data plan? Call me skeptical."

Suppose Obama's FCC decides, smartly, that the carriers cannot require a data plan as a condition of using the cell phone features If that were the case, I would buy an iPhone, instead of an IPT 5G, in a flash. Always near wi-fi, would never use 3G for surfing.

Maybe the FCC will also require carriers to permit go-phone type SIMs, too.

We can only hope. But unless the FCC acts, you are right on target-- no reason, they'd willingly give up their draconian requirement of $15+ data plans just to use a smartphone as a phone!

OK OK I officially give up believing that there will be separate events.
They would be too close to each other now and might cause Event Burnout or a black hole or something.. We are going to have a the iPods and iPhones combined this year because of production delays I guess. I don't expect this to be the rule though.
I looked around for somebody that might have more of an idea than me as to what is going on and found these predictions at Cult of Mac.

At least they are using actual facts to base their predictions on. The story is that invites will go out next week for a Sept 21 (Wednesday) rollout event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Product will be available in early October. Sounds spot on to me but we shall see. Not much time left in the month to do this.

Thanks for the link and the solid speculation. I agree, time seems to be running out. My feeling is that the invitations usually come a bit earlier than this, but the story suggest that I'm wrong!

They come about a full week before the event. Thus, nothing will happen before the 19th of September. Wild speculation says it will be at the end of this month, so we should hear word before the 23rd. Bet we hear next week, the event just before month's end, and thus the release of the iOS/iPhone in early October as expected. Bet the iPods are instantly ready for release.

I do not believe Apple will release both at the same time. The two devices are way too similar to each other and the iPod Touch is way too lacking certain important iPhone features for Apple to expose the iPod Touch's launch being overshadowed by the great fanfare of the iPhone.

That's what I thought but an event with the iPhone IS going to happen in the next two weeks. They are unlikely to release the new iPhone without an event of some kind. You would have to argue that there would be another iPod event after that in October. I don't see any likelihood of that.
The invites should go out this week and they may give us a clue.
If the iPhone is just the same externally with improved internal parts then perhaps the fanfare will not be so great - especially if the new Touch is the thin 4inch screen device we have seen cases for.

We shall know soon enough.
