Does anyone know if the new iPod touch due to be released Sep 1 be eligible for the "Back to School" promotion?

Nope. The reason Apple does the Back to School promotion is to clear out iPod touch stock to make room for the newer model.

The past two iPod touch generations have been released on the same day they were announced. Why would they change that?

In the past, I think they started selling new iPod models after the promotion ended.

I'm getting different replies from the apple retail store folks. one says the new ipod touch is eligible but another says no.

arghh...dunno if i should wait before buying my computer

worst case, you get a previous gen ipod touch which YOU sell and get some quick cash. use that money to get a new gen iPT. done and done.
