New iPod touch? Do I have to do anything special?

It's been a while since I've synced a new iPod touch with my computer, and I can't remember how this works. I guess I'm getting a third gen one tonight as I accidentally wrecked my second gen last night.

Can I just hook it up, and will it copy my old backup back on to it? Do I even WANT it to copy my old backup, given that it's not even the same hardware, and for all I know it could be copying something that'll screw up the new hardware?

I guess iPods aren't really "activated", just the computer? So my programs I've purchased should just copy back on, without using up another activation slot, right?

Set it up as a new Ipod. I don't know if you can restore from a different model ipod touch. If anything Itunes would prevent it.

    Okay, thanks!

I was going to buy it last night at Target, but it turns out both Target and Best Buy list much lower prices on their websites than in store, as per Apple's policy :-/ Soooo waiting on Amazon :D

As long as the software version is the same from your 2nd gen backup to the 3rd gen which should be 3.1.3, you can use your backup to preserve all your data. I did it from my 1st to 2nd gen, then my 3G to 3GS (even though they said you should start as new, I haven't had any battery problems whatsoever)
