For several years now, the focus has been on optimizing software. Apple has been a trendsetter in that regard. The OS in 2020 is likely to be about the same size as the one today, and it runs beautifully on much less than 4 GB. Barring that, 4 GB should be plenty. Enjoy.

Having updated two Mac Minis from 4GB to 16GB there is a huge increase in performance. Just like when updating from mechanical hardisk to SSD.

OP: Get as much RAM as possible and a SSD.

I get what you mean, it compromises on ports and other areas and I thought I would hate it, but when I visited the Apple Store, I was so taken aback; it's such a beautiful item and looks so much like the future. I wasn't sure about the keyboard but I could definitely see myself using it as my iPad/MBA 11" replacement. I wouldn't however use it as my sole computing device. I would consider it with my 15" Pro but not alone, whereas my 11" was perfectly useable as my main computer (even pumping Guild Wars 2 at one point :p).

That's what finally decided me on the Air over the inaugural MB. It's my sole computer so there were a few things that for me felt non-negotiable at this point. But boy, it was pretty. 2019'll be my year! :D

Depends on what you're doing with them, I guess. I currently have a Mac Mini with 4GB RAM. My previous Mac had 8GB RAM. I didn't see any performance degradation going from 8GB to 4GB.

4GB is enough for your needs. I'm also a college student(engineering) and I'm contented to this computer and gonna use this till I graduate. I use my mac for word processing, presentation, programming, research and entertainment. I installed Windows 10(via bootcamp) on this computer in case I need it for some engineering apps that is not available on OS X. my macbook air model is mid 2013 13" 128gb/4gb i5 1.3ghz
