Just curious how they will price these when they start showing up in the refurb store. I would be willing to bet there will not be a lot of movement on the price.

Just a way to make you think that $1299 is a better deal (which it is). Either way, they are making high and higher profit margin models.

It's not at all uncommon to see the current $1,299 model on sale at retailers for $100-150 off, not to even mention that refurbs are only $1,099 direct from Apple right now. Much better to go with one of those than this new model that was released today.

I think this new model is dumb. But why wouldn't you then be able to nab these newer machines at lower price points in the future?

I.E. "You can get the faster one for the same price refurbished." "Yeah, but I can get these even cheaper than that with an educational discount."

Too bad that they don't have an i3 processor downgrade to save another $100
Heck, how about a 64GB SSD for additional savings

An SSD would be an improvement.

Reliance on a mechanical HDD is the weakest link with this iMac

The CPU, GPU and RAM are all more than adequate for an entry-level product.

So for $200 less, Apple will sell you a lemon...

...Well that seems like normal Apple economics, move along people :p

$200 dollars less.

1: Slower CPU (computer generally)
2: Slower GPU (slower graphics generally)
3: Half the HDD Storage space 500GB instead of 1TB

Errrrr. Why?

One of the "Exciting New Products" for 2014 eh Tim?

In the UK the price difference between a 500GB and 1TB HDD is about £10 (that's $16 US Dollars)

So for a machine still over a Thousand Dollars, (plus sales tax) you are going to cut the HDD drive size in half for the sake of $16 (or less to Apple) difference.

Pretty sad to do that (and the CPU/GPU thing) on a machine with this total cost :(

This new iMac is too slow for a consumer desktop. The purpose might be to clear out inventory before the retina iMacs..? Green machine to make us feel warm and fuzzy..?

Margin on these will be very high at $1,099.:D

If I were buying now refurb all the way. Sad to think the 2014 Mac Mini release might be a stupid slow machine. Come on, Apple. Make the Mac Mini all quad core and ssd. Do that to the retina iMacs too. Jeez.

p.s. no more 16GB iPhones either. Jeez.

This machine is powerful enough for a significant number of users. It is just a pity the price isn't as low as the performance.

Yet again those complaining about the speed have no idea that the vast majority of buyers at this price point won't give a monkey's arse about speed and no SSD for the light emailing and internetting that they do.

Is it a bargain price, no, if you want a bargain get a PC and the all in ones from Dell and Co. are quite pricey too. Sure it should be cheaper but it's not so move on.

Not surprised. Knew this was TC's Apple when the rear camera was removed from iPod Touch. Penny ante bean counting.

For the home user whose computer use is 99% checking email and browsing the internet, will they really care about dual core vs. quad core performance?

We will see it drop to $999 when the Retina Macs come, along with cuts to all non-retina versions.
To be fair my MBA can do basically anything I throw at it and it is slower than this computer, I do Photoshop on it too... But it also has a super fast SSD. But I did pay more than this iMac would of cost. 5000 graphics are also nothing to sneeze at for occasional gaming.

So much for quality first.

Apply's new approach to innovation: lower quality, lower cost, more marketing.

What's changed about the quality? I see spec changes. I don't expect heavy marketing of this product, but I guess we'll see....

Some would say that a slavish focus on specs IS marketing. Marketing that works on many people, and many companies are addicted to the spec race.

But the better question than some number is: what will this machine do for me? I think there are people who will find it has enough power, a great screen in a small space, a terrific OS and software bundle, excellent construction, and does plenty to justify owning one--which people can now do so for less. With sales, it will surely be found below a grand.

(And I agree that refurbs are always worth a look too.)

I don't understand why people are getting grumpy about this. My father-in-law just bought a mac because he was tired of having so many issues with Windows PC's and he wanted the cheapest thing because all he does is email, internet, and MS Office. This would have been more than enough for him.

Think of that logic for elementary schools. They get a bunch of Mac's for cheaper that have more power than they need for basic stuff. This works out for a lot of people. Just because you don't want a Mac this slow doesn't mean it isn't a great alternative to many others.

Hold on to your panties everyone, you don't have to buy this version;

I bet energy consumption is way lower, which is another cost advantage for schools.
The most sought after mac today? Oh yeah, its the macbook air, which has the same performance, and no one is complaining. Its plenty fast for every casual user, browsing the web and storing photos.

I can't be bothered to look at the prices for the two processors, but having only changed the processor and the hard drive I hardly think they make much more than 200$ in savings for apple. So i bet the margin could be lower on these imacs. Think about it.
