One thing I learned recently is that you can very easily set a custom resolution on the Macs with a notch and just have it make the screen a little bit shorter so the notch and the space to the left and right of it is left black. What that means in practice is you get the same resolution as the M1 Air, but with a little unused space across the top. The notch essentially disappears. Worth a try anyway.
It seems weird that people would choose less resolution just to avoid seeing the notch. When Apple pushed the screen up into the top bezel they did leave the area belose the same size but with the notch you can move the whole menu off the screen content area. If you cannot get over the look of the notch, there are some utilities that will make the menu bar always black so you don’t see the notch anymore without sacrificing screen resolution.

I tried the reduced screen resolution for a while and frankly it did just look cleaner, and you get to not have something blocking your menu bar. People have different preferences. I think the notch is a kind of ugly compromise and I'm sure the minute they can accomodate a good webcam less obtrusively, they'll do it.

Ended up buying one of these and returning it because it came with a dead battery. Literally the moment I opened the Mac from the box, it needed to stay plugged in at all times to work. The battery said “Service” and the moment I unplugged it, it would die instantly. I returned it.

Wonder how many months Walmart had been sitting on this inventory.

You should still be able to get a free battery under warranty.
