I'm looking to replace my Late 2016 MBP with an M2 MBA. The current MBP has 8GB/512GB and has about 125GB user data on the SSD while my iMac has 24GB/516GB with about 235GB of user data.

It would be nice to have the capability to store all of my data on one Mac which clearly would necessitate the 512GB SSD. But what if things stayed the same? Most of my data would stay on my iMac and my MBA could get more memory at the expense of SSD space (but still be able to hold what it does today).

Any thoughts on this?

Get higher memory. You can't upgrade it future state where as storage can be extended via networked disks or SD cards or other types of storage options.
Thanks for you comment. And I like your reasoning. I ordered both configurations as time was running out and figured I'd just cancel or return one in a couple days. I was disappointed to find that the 16GB/256GB version resulted in the default power connector being bumped down to the 30W, single connection version. Since this was an exercise to keep the price under $1500 I needed to just take it.
