New M4 Mac Mini using my iMac late 2013 Catalina 27" display

I read that target mode is no longer available with new Mac Mini M4 using my 27" iMac display.

It would be terrific if I could connect a new Mac Mini to my iMac display, switching the display between the iMac and the new Mac Mini so I can use both Macs.

I was looking at the web, and did not see a good solution for this.

Any ideas, can it be done?

Only you can decide whether this solution is "good or bad"... you'll need to remote screen share you Mac mini M4 display to your 27" iMac. For best graphics, use something like this....

You can use built in screen sharing. If you connect them directly using either thunderbolt or ethernet then you can use high performance mode. I use it on a 2014 imac 27, with mac os 11. Senoma on the mac mini m4.

It feels almost native.

so with the newest Mini Mac M4 Pro I will be able to use high performance screen sharing to my 2013 iMac Catalina that I still intend to use.

I will be able to use the M4 newest OS, and still use the iMac from the same wireless keyboard and mouse. I assume setting up screen sharing on the Mac Mini I need a hardwired keyboard. I still do screen sharing from my iMac to an old Power Mac G5 that has an accounting package I use. The display lags some. You say with the high performance screen sharing the iMac display will almost be as good as having a display directly attached to the Mini Mac.

Thank you for your input. So the only thing I really need is just the new Mini Mac Pro M4.

Not too sure about catalina but yes for big sur. From what i remember the 2013 has a 1440p screen so should work quite fast in normal mode. I had a 2011 and used screen sharing as a second screen for a m1 mini with High Sierra. Looked great but only was around 25-30fps. 2013 shoud be better. I needed to switch between intel and apple silicon for apps that only worked on intel and visa versa and that worked a treat.

Also must say that i used one of those dongles too. Really speeded things up and your mac will only mirror from your main screen if you don't have one.

Catalina does not support high performance screen sharing. Apple says that you need to be on macOS Sonoma or later on both computers to use high performance mode, which mirrors my experience with it.
