I think I must have been one of the first people to notice this. I picked up a new MacBook Pro the day they came out (I was 10th in line and the stock had just arrived in the store). The first thing I did when I got it home was to try using it when reclined. Imagine my disappointment when I found that the lid just flopped shut. None of the other MacBooks that I'd owned did this.

I figured I'd open it up and take a look at the hinges. They are absolutely unadjustable. The only way one could conceivably tighten the hinge would be to dislocate the coil spring, add a turn, then relocate it; very risky! Another way might be to bend the bush that the hinge twists within in order to disengage the mechanism that stops the hinge from turning beyond the preset maximum angle. Once this is done, one could add an extra turn to the hinge thus tightening the coil spring. Again, this is too risky as it may cause the bush to snap when it is bent. Before putting the MBP back together, I washed all of the grease out of the hinge with some thinners. My attempt at adding friction was in vain as the lid still flopped (though not quite as much).

After telling people about this, I was given the usual fanboy response of "you should compromise, it's a great laptop... and to be honest, no one uses a laptop like that anyway!"... well, I _DO_ use my laptop like that, and having just spent $3100 on it (yes, that's how much it equates to with currency conversion), I don't feel that I should be compromising. The purchase is meant to suit me, not the other way around! With this in mind, I returned it to the store the next day.

I've now put in an order for a new, top-of-the-range MacBook Air. I previously had an Air and felt that it was fantastic. The only thing that I felt it lacked was good IO performance when it came to hard drive access. The logical solution to this was to get the SSD model. The problem is, I'm now without a laptop until November 7th! It's a small price to pay for happiness though.

Mine doesn't really do that. Yes, it shuts if you lift the laptop with the lid half-closed but that seems normal for a 15" non-Thinkpad (those things have some stiff hinges :p)

it's not really a design flaw, my Toshiba satellite has the same problem, but i didn't notice it until i read this thread. i turned my laptop 90 degress and the screen closed.
