The cursor appears on the screen and responds to the trackpad but nothing else. Second time this has happened this week. (Intel CPU.)

Do you have other input ports on the back of the display that you could try?
(other than HDMI)

I did.
I'm using Catalina so not much there for me.
using a Samsung TV at the moment so HDMI it is.

I too have had this issue. In my case the screen saver is running, the cursor moves in response to my using the trackpad, and music continues to play.

It has occurred twice.

Pressing the power button on the Mini acts like smelling salts for the Mini, and I can log in.

I too am using an Intel mini, 2018, and running the latest Catalina 10.15.7.
