Right but I don't understand. If the Apple silicon is so much more energy efficient / less heat generation, why do we need something the side of three mac mini's intel version to support 64gb?
Market segmentation. All computer makers do the same thing. They all have their variation of "good, better, best" where none of the options really makes sense for most people. "Good" hits a price point but is purposefully crippled in some way so everyone but the most cost conscious upgrade, at least to "better". "Better" is what works for most everyone but is really more expensive that what they really should be paying. If you have any real compute or storage needs then you have to upgrade to "best". And, of course, "best" costs top dollar and is really overkill but it's the only model that has that one "must have" feature. Welcome to capitalism.

What? Why can’t the M2 Pro mini support the Apple studio display? On check out in the online Apple Store you actually get asked if you want to buy an ASD as an accessory for the Mini.
It can. But it can't support three of them which is my current set-up (see the post you replied to above).

I couldn’t quite justify the additional $300 for my 12 yo’s first Mac - which is 100% intended as a Steam gaming box. ;)

Depending on your needs and budget, $300 more for a 512/16 config + M2 Pro, is super enticing - esp. should you find any price drops down the road. Keep us posted.
If you don’t mind me asking ,if is for a 12 year old kid to game ,why not a switch or ps4/5 or Xbox ,gamepass is really cheap I hear

Ordered a M2 Pro Mini 10c/16GB/1TB to replace my well aged 2013 27” i5 iMac. Will be my first Mini and my first AS machine. I’m pretty excited to get it but I’m nervous about the 3rd party monitor situation and my lack of knowledge regarding scaling, dpi, and resolutions. I ordered a LG 34BK95U-W 5K/2K to go with it, I hope it will work without a hitch. 🤞🏻
I ordered the identical M2 Pro configuration last night. Curious what the scaling concern is. My current M1 base Mini from last year looks great driving a 43" 4K TV that I use as my desktop monitor. I don't expect the M2 Pro to have any issues either. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the actual issue at hand.

I was going to get the M2 Pro 12c Mini, but then I thought about the relative performance I would get from 3x of the base mini (edu). Just couldn't pull the trigger - the performance doesn't match the price. Might still get the base model though, or a refurb/clearance M1 model if some real steals pop up.

Decent uplift on the CPU side but the real benefits need to you leverage the GPU. Apple is using this as a crutch and it shows.

While I'm on it, why does the macbook pro also need to be so much thicker, heavier than the Intel one? It’s no longer an apple-to-apple comparison either.
Because no matter what, a processor will generate heat, and the better cooling the better experience.
Yes, Apple Silicon is way more power efficient. That’s why you see it an iPhones, iPads, and fanless laptops.
But no matter what, computers generate heat.
Better cooling is better cooling no matter the architecture.

Not going to lie, I threw-up a little in my mouth scrolling past all the links to the "influencer" videos. 🙄 🤢

I don't think the CNET video counts quite as influencer stuff, however like all of the video content from online magazines, it's what would have been a 300 word blurb I read in less than a minute stretched into a longish video. The move away from text is sad (and wastes time!)

I'm not sure what crying about it is going to do for this forum discussion.
Hopefully eliminates references to them in future articles.

I guess the AI chatbot engine wasn’t updated recently enough for CNET to “write” an article. https://news.yahoo.com/cnet-pauses-ai-written-articles-172500603.html

It's not going to. MKBHD has 16.6 million followers, iJustine has 7.1 million, etc., etc. Whether you like it or not, there are a ton of people who appreciate their tech reviews. Deal with it and keep scrolling if you don't like it. Literally nobody cares whether you think YouTubers are annoying or not.

EDIT: And before you come back with "Well clearly you care because you commented"... no, I don't care what your opinions are on YouTubers. I care about all the time I have to waste scrolling through people that are posting about how they don't like YouTubers when all I'm trying to do is read comments regarding M2 Mac Mini reviews.

Don't mind you asking. It is for a 12 yo, and it's primarily for "gaming" - tho I use that word loosely as he's relatively new to gaming. Sure, he was playing Minecraft on an iPad at age 5. And for a minute, he was enjoying Fortnite on the neighbor's PC (and Switch). But he has always been drawn to games more centered on building and engineering.
Example: his current go-to is Kerbal Space Program, via Steam. That's a daily driver (on it as I type). He keeps reminding me it's "34 days until KSP 2" - which admittedly, looks like a pretty badass update. So he's not [yet] into mainstream titles that are obviously best suited for dedicated gaming boxes or PCs. And I'm in no hurry to force him that direction. Plus, ours is an Apple-household; several iPads, laptops, desktops, phones, watches, ATVs, speakers, headphones, etc. As one of those rare unicorns that is almost 50, and somehow never have used a Windows-based machine - save those PCs at public libraries back in the day - I'm not looking to try and add a PC to The Ecosystem any time soon (if ever).

So yes - there are better/cheaper gaming scenarios. We're just not at that crossroads. Yet. 😜

Maybe encourage the editors to feature genuine tech reviews rather than the garbage these fame wannabe‘s spew out?
That’s the biggest problem. The influencers have basically sucked all the revenue from legacy tech sites that used to have great articles and now something that used to be condensed into something I can read in 2 minutes is now a 20 minute drawn out video.

Well, you did beat me to it with your edit, and no matter how much you deny it you do care what my opinions are. Look out MKBHDLMNOP and Justine! I have a follower now and before you know I’ll have my own chirpy YouTube channel! 😂
