The Intel NUC is a great alternative to a Mac mini.

Given current performance and costs, I'd buy a skull canyon

Thanks @MH01 and @dogslobber, I didn't know of the NUC before today.

    Found:
… and from a 2015 verdict by The Register,

(I'm a few days away from gifting a used Mac Mini to friends. The less friendly design of Apple's recent models is driving me towards 2012 models.)

The advantage of the skull canyon is its TB3 interface, you can buy something like the razor core

And you have yourself something the size of a Mac mini, that turns into a desktop gaming replacement.

The future is looking really good. I think small form factor computers with add on devices such as the core are the future.

On the notebook side, Novena intrigues me. I'll take a closer look next year, wonder whether anything like it will be FreeBSD-friendly. https://twitter.com/novenakosagi/status/646915998516310017 wood + aluminium even more intriguing, although for me it's wrecked by that stupid red nipple instead of a trackpad :-/
