2.66 Froze

Well, yesterday about a quarter of the way through a Handbrake job, my Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core froze up... No input was allowed from my wired keyboard or mouse. I unplugged and plugged everything back, didn't do anything.

I had to hold the power button down to shutdown the computer.

I reset the PRAM and Repaired Permissions... Now I'm in Handbrake once again, about half way through, no issues so far... I wonder why?

I have the logitech revolution, on my quad I have had no freezes yet (touchwood) but I haven't installed LCC either.

The mouse does not feel quite 'right' without the drivers it seems, I can't quite put my finger on what the problem is, I have tried a bunch of different speeds but thats not the problem. It's kinda like the pointer constantly ends up a few pixels short of where it should be.

So I am debating whether to install LCC, has anyone NOT had problems with LCC on the new mac pros?

I know what you mean about the logitech mouse. I think it is the speed multiplier. The OSX drivers I think are linear where as the logitech drivers have a steeper rise in mouse speed. I am using an older MX310 and it's working great, despite the fact that I can't program the extra buttons however I like (I had the side buttons forward/back for the web and finder) though I can assign them for expose.

I haven't had the courage to install LCC yet. I migrated some stuff from the G5 and it put LCC in my system preferences, but it was PPC so it wont run. For now the mouse is plenty usable as is.

I have not had 1 freeze up yet. I have had a couple programs crash/freeze but no more than they used to. The only real issue I have is the "snow on wake from sleep or monitor input change" and the slight static on the screen when you look really close. Neither of those issues are the end of the world. I'll wait for 10.5.7 or maybe snow leopard and if the problems aren't fixed with a driver/firmware update I'll call apple.

My input is freezing each 4 seconds for half a second.. right out of the box. Going back next week.

Sounds like problems, get it checked out

My Mac Pro has been running since the day I received it (6 days ago) and it is running flawlessly. Migration Assistant did not work completely, but I got what I needed from my 2008 Mac Pro. It is a 2.93 8 core, and in fact, I never even turned it on stock. The first thing I did out of the box was remove the stock 1gb dimms (6 of them) and replace them with 2gb dimms. They happened to be identical specs (Nanya) and even look the same as the apple ones except they are double sided. Machine booted perfectly, did the transfers in about 2 hours, and good to go. Other than a few updates it is perfect. The only thing I have been having problems with is an eSata Silicon Image card for me to hook up my external OWC drive. My 2008 Mac Pro had an eSata bracket connected to the 2 ODD connectors and it worked great. I had one kernel panic, and decided to pull the card. I think the problem is drivers since Silicon Image has not updated them in almost 2 years. I just ordered the Caldigit eSata card, since I have a Caldigit Raid card in my other Mac Pro and it has served me well.

Peace,
Noushy

Whoa.. talk about all these issues. I know their minor but I think I'm going to at least wait until 10.5.7 is out to make sure I get the best experience.

But what bothers me the most is the psu buzzing noises that I keep hearing about. Seems that most of the 2.26GHz model owners have this issue. This is also the reason I want to jump to the 2.66GHz octad model.

The only real issue I have is the "snow on wake from sleep or monitor input change"

This morning I had the snow on the second monitor when waking up from sleep mode.

I've had the machine for two weeks, this is the first issue. Restarted, and all is OK. I'm not going to worry about it unless it happens frequently.

Just an update to say I installed SteerMouse and it's really improved the mouse response for me, and it's customisable to the point where you dont need to consider the Logitech drivers at all :)

steermouse is great! been using it for years and it makes every mouse behave just as it should!

I just wanted to say that after I repaired the Permissions and reset the PRAM, all is well... No freezes since!

In the Apple forums, people are having the same issue and repairing the Permissions seems to be working for most... Weird.

I'm using SteerMouse as well. It is far more stable than the LCC drivers for my Revolution 1100, BUT it can't address two buttons on the 1100. Developer says they are hidden to third-party apps.

By the way, I'm only 2-3 days into testing my 2.9 8 core Mac Pro, but it's running great so far. And it runs quieter than my old 4 core 3.0 Ghz Mac Pro, even with the ATI 4870.

I got to say I'm a bit disappointing I received my octo 2.93 the other day and I will lose connection to my wireless mouse maybe 3 or 4 times a day and I have to restart the computer. When the mouse freezes, the keyboard might work or might not, usually it still works(wired keyboard). I'm going to talk with Apple, spent way too much money to have to have problems with the machine.
