So what kind of work do you do that you can justify performance gain at the cost greatly increasing your chance of catastrophic failure? Is there some app you run that is intolerably slow without RAID 0?

Unless you're connecting to a SAN which already protects you with redundancy I can't understand why anyone would use RAID 0.

Backups are great, but you're still SOL for as long as it takes you to purchase new disks reinstall and restore from backup (if your backup procedure works).

For me, working with large VMs, video files and images make a huge difference. It's also a great place for scratch storage for applications like Photoshop. I use mine purely for a scratch area and store no long term data on the stripe.

Incidentally, I've been running a RAID 0 on my PC and the drives are still running after nearly 5 years.

Just purchased a Mac Pro and will continue to run a RAID 0 - the performance is worth it if you respect the fact the drives are for scratch space only.

Cheers,

Stuart
