Can only imagine the pricing on these NAND modules...? Probably enough to make Microsoft blush on their Xbox Series SSD option.

I hope these find their way into the mini, Studio and iMac someday; not so sure about the notebooks except for the MacBook Pro line-up (14/16 inch models, 13-inch excluded).

Following the introduction of the Apple silicon Mac Pro, Apple today added SSD upgrade kits to its online store. The kits offer 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB of storage space for $1,000, $1,600, and $2,800, respectively.

The kits feature two 1TB SSDs, two 2TB SSDs, or two 8TB SSDs, and replace the existing internal SSD storage of the Mac Pro.

The hardware is compatible only with the new 2023 Mac Pro machines that use Apple's M2 Ultra chips.

The kits can be ordered starting today, with delivery dates starting on June 9.

I assume this was meant to say "two 4TB SSD's"?

Can anyone price out anything comparable on the PC side? To me it looks like the actual intended audience can do things simply not possible on other workstations….
You’re right, there’s a few things here that’s not possible on other workstations, at all. There’s no price that can be paid for a PC that can do the same.

Why? WHO in their right mind is going to spend $1000 for 2TB of SSD storage for a $999 device or even a $1999 device when Amazon is flooded with 2TB SSD's for around $125?

Those better be magical with those prices. 3rd party offerings should be less expensive. At least there are upgrades available though. Now we just need upgradable RAM.
This is truly Apple's dream come true: sell proprietary SSDs that are only compatible with 1 single proprietary computer which cannot use any other kind of storage! But also increase the price of the computer in the meantime, of course.
Those SSDs are super speedy, you will see in benchmarks. Also you can connect any PCIe SSD and even SATA SSD ike in the 2019 version.

Insane pricing.

But with the PCIe expansion, you can install one or more SSD cards on those. SATA or NVMe. Far cheaper and just as reliable with no perceptible speed difference.
Which SSD cards? Granted it is cheap and easy and lots to choose from in the PC world, but in the Apple Silicon world? Who makes one and how much?

True but about the speed we will see. I really notice 500MB/s (SATA) from 1500MB/s basic PCIe speed and also I notice a lot when opening pro apps and library on Apple modern SSD that run from 3000 to 6000MB/s

Insane considering how much SSD prices are. I get an Apple Tax, but this is completely over the top.
Noone in the media is going to call them out for it. MacRumors would be ALL OVER that kind of pricing if say, Dell tried to pull that. Apple gets a pass.

Apple's charging $2,000 USD for a 4TB SSD while Newegg sells a WD Black 4TB SSD for $660.

DISGUSTING. Absolutely DISGUSTING.

Apple definitely knocked this mac pro out of the park 🤣🤣🤣.

Are those PCI ports compatible with storage, or just more apple blessed proprietary bs?

Are you sure you cant fit in something like

Corsair MP600 MINI?

I'm sure there may be others, but I swear by Other World Computing. They're Mac-centric and they've yet to do me wrong.

What?? Maxing out the CPU for both the Pro and the Studio already has a $3k price difference. Three grand for the option to only add PCI cards and ridiculously expensive SSDs?

No upgradable RAM and no 3rd party GPU's. Major fail.

Not everyone is going to rewrite apps for apple GPU.
The RAM in the M series processors is within the chip itself. There is no way to do external to the processor upgrades.

Apple also don't support third party GPUs in the M series processors. It's not looking like they intend to in the near future at all. While everybody may not rewrite their software, those that want their software to work well on the Apple platform will. If the software you want isn't re-written to take advantage of Apple silicon, then your choice is either find different software, or pick a different platform to use.

I'm guessing Apple has determined that the market that would switch platforms for this reason is relatively small.

As far as SSD pricing, yes, Apple stuff is significantly more expensive, but SSDs are not all created equal. There are definitely speed differences between different models, especially sustained speeds. There's also the reliability factor. I've worked with literally hundreds if not thousands of machines, and the ones with Apple SSDs (or RAM) very rarely show any issues. The ones that have had third party devices installed are far more likely to have problems. Random crashes, drive failures, performance issues, etc. Just happens sometimes.

How do you know they work on Apple Silicon machines? Just because it has a slot that fits doesn't mean it's compatible. PCIe SSD cards that work in Windows PC's don't work in Dell Servers running Windows. We won't know until actual units are out for testing.
