still havent gotten an answer though..

does anyone know or have any idea the possibly percentage increase in speed with this new mac pro?

I'm only making a guess, so don't take it too seriously. ;)

For non threaded apps that aren't memory intensive, say 20 - 30%.

For threaded/memory intensive apps, say 30 - 50%. (Presuming all memory channels used).

The memory bus seems to offer the greatest performance advantage, provided your apps can use it. Newer OS's like Snow Leopard and Windows 7 will hopefully further improve performance, provided they deliver as promised. ;)

I'm still waiting for some concrete numbers myself. :p

Did you buy the base model? Did you use the developer discount?

well i found a guy willing to buy the computer for $2500. I am just contemplating on whether or not it is worth the wait (will be using a mac mini for the time being) and the extra cash. What would you guys do in my position?

IMHO, and no harm meant, if you can live fine with a mac mini for an undetermined amount of time until the new Mac Pros come out, you don't NEED a Mac Pro. My advice? Keep your Mac Pro, don't sell it and use it for years to come, because it's a very very powerful machine and can run a lot of todays software flawlessly.

Your call.

this is for home use. I have a mac pro at the office. I use four displays simultaneously at home to connect to the office and run computers remotely, as well as trade.

oh I definitely dont NEED a new mac pro, I just want one :)

The mac mini will definitely be a downgrade, considering I will have several displays blank for a good time, but for basic email and communications it should do fine. No stock trading though.

From just a quick look at this post, it is evident to me that you are not anywhere near maxing out your current Mac Pro.

What do you expect the newest, latest Mac Pro to do better than what you are using it for today? I can understand if you were using it to render massive videos or working at Pixar. But, really, what do you expect that a newer, better, faster, "we can rebuild him", machine is going to do better?

If all you are doing is trading, email, remote admin connections, you are NOT anywhere close to maxing out your current Mac Pro.

IMHO, spending the cash to move to another box would just be bragging rights without any other benefit. You would only have a debit to your checking account without anything else to show for it.

Edit - Another read of you OP said that you currently have a Mini. Still the same thing holds true to some extent. Do you really need a Mac Pro - or just really want one? I had outdated hardware, a G3 iMac, when I jumped to my current desktop. If you REALLY need it then go for it. But, remember that in the end, it likely is overkill. I wanted mine for future upgrades and video work. Your mileage may vary....
