I just received a brand new mac pro and I'm trying to image it with an older image but it will not recognize my external drive. When booting up with Option button, the only thing that comes up is either network or the actual internal HD. Would anyone have any suggestions?

Your older Mac image may have a OS older then the new Mac Pro will support. The newest Mac Pro (2013) will support (according to Mactracker):
