Since iDVD and iWeb aren't going to be getting new updates or be there whenever I get a new Mac, and since I haven't really used either one of them in a long time, is there a way I can remove iDVD and iWeb from my Mac easily and without hurting anything?

The original article isn't clear. Will this only work if I blow out the hard drive and reinstall on the new Mac Mini? Or will it work as soon as I launch the App Store on the new mini, without reinstalling?

Does it work with Lion too? If you buy a new mac with Lion, can you upgrade your other machines?

I bought the new MacBook Air and the answer is, no, Lion is not added to your App Store account. Only iLife.

Well here's something to think about... this linking to your Apple ID also means you can't sell the mac with the software you bought on the app store unless you want to let the buyer keep the Apple ID.

This is not true. The apps stay on the mac forever and can in fact be updated through the App Store even without being linked or logged in to any account.

However, if the new owner for some reason deletes the apps or wipes the hard drive, then they would have to re-purchase the apps.

Hidden recovery partitions are no good. Hard drives last 1.5 to 5 years. Then you will need a disc, and you'll pay thru the nose for it.

I want to know this also

Did you read the article?
But one key feature of the Mac App Store is that a single purchased license permits downloading of the software to any machines owned or controlled by the person linked to that Apple ID and logged in with the account. That key feature means that the iLife licenses issued to new computers via the Mac App Store permit users to download the software to their other Macs that may not have been upgraded to the latest version of iLife.
You can upgrade to iLife '11 on the other machines, but not with Lion.

I won't believe it until someone actually does it. If I buy a MacBook Air today, you think iLife will appear "Installed" in my Mac App Store?? Good luck! Show me.

Yeah in some cases it does. My wife got a new iMac just before Lion was released, and we used the voucher code from the Up To Date program. It added Lion to the App Store for all registered machines (also using it on my 24" 2008 iMac).

iLife doesn't show up though. Maybe because they know this Mac was shipped with a DVD?

Apple's new computers shipping with Lion do not include physical restore media and instead utilize a hidden recovery partition to allow users to reinstall their system software should the need arise. But as noted by Macworld, reinstallation of the iLife '11 software included on new Macs occurs via the Mac App Store, which recognizes the machines' iLife licenses and links them to users' Apple IDs during the initial setup process.

I'll miss iDVD a little bit, it was so much easier adding titles and hyper links on DVDs to make them look professional on an easy to use piece of software. Hope they integrate some features in iMovie or another program in the future

Apple has embraced the cloud so I guess they view DVDs as ancient history :), one less thing for their engineers to worry about. But it would still be nice to have some kind of a DVD like wrapper (UI with menus) around our home movies...?

Exactly. The iTunes LP format would lend itself well. Then these little packages could play in iTunes and (hopefully eventually) on iOS devices especially AppleTV.

It's so obvious...what are they waiting for??!

So I could go to my mothers house, logged into her app store with my id. download iLife, then remove my id. from her mac store?

Or would iLife simply not load once I had logged myself out?

Macrrumors is getting slow. I posted on this days ago! :p

The applications were included in the boxed version of iLife '11, but did not receive any meaningful updates from the iLife '09 versions, meaning that users with fully-updated iLife '09 installed are already running the most up-to-date versions of iWeb and iDVD anyway.

iWeb

The discontinuation of iWeb is a MAJOR disappointment with me. I have used it to keep workgroups updated, advertise health conferences and to sell my house. Very very disappointed - it's a high class application. I wish they would at least spin it off to someone else to maintain.

I logged into AppStore on my 2010 MBP after updating my 2011 MBA, and am in the process of installing all three apps without an issue.

I bought a refurbished Macbook Air with Lion up-to-date and once redeemed, Lion is added to my account. Downloading on my 2007 Macbook as we speak :)

Can anyone who has a new iMac, that came with Lion pre-installed, tell me if it shipped with iDVD and iWeb?

Hi everyone,
I just bought a macbook air today and I am trying to get this to sync back to my 2010 macbook pro using lion. I don't see ilife showing up in the app store. How do you make this happen? Does it show up the first time that an update is required or something?

Hi PeterM11.

You're on a Mac, simply throw what you don't want into the basket, that's all. ;)

Be advised that without the iLife DVD you won't be able to get them back should you need them; but I guess that's clear.

Hello,
I just want to confirm that this does work. I bought my parents a new Mac Mini last week and it came pre loaded with Lion and iLife 11. I logged into App store with my AppleID from the Mac Mini and it detected Lion and iLife 11 along with my other purchases. I clicked the Accept button next to iLife 11 and closed the App Store. Then i logged onto the App Store on my older iMac and Lion and iLife 11 showed up. I was then apple to install iLife 11 only iMac which had the older iLife 09 on it. It was that easy.:)
