Wow, can’t believe they switched from expensive Intel chips to their own ARM chips and kept the price the same. The profit margin on these must be insane, even for Apple.
Except now there are no more CPU upgrade options. Remember the Ice Lake MacBook Air started with a dual core option, with the quad core a $100 upgrade.

If you remove all the bezels, I guess there will be less room for speakers? I'm fine with the design. Heck, I look at my old MacBook Pro 2010 and I think it looks fine. My MacBook Air 2013 looks fine. Really, Apple has always done a class job in making design rather ageless, especially because of the choice of using aluminium. Okay, big bezels with the base iPad may look somewhat outdated, but really the design still looks fine to me. It's not that I constantly shout: Those bezels! Not once when I use my MacBook Air or iPad.
How do the speakers come into play in regards to the screen bezel? Genuine question, something I've never really thought about.

About things "being fine", I know you say it in an innocent way (so not having a go) but it's such a common, grating theme. Quite often people suggest changes or refinements, and others say shoot them down saying that "it's fine" and "is it really a big deal?!" to sandbag their argument. I mean, this is a forum based on high-end computers that are all about ultimate form and function. If the buck stops at "fine", then things were fine many, many years ago and there's no need for this or any other Apple forum.

So of course, yes all the models look fine, but would a smaller bezel be better? Fair enough if you think it would detract from form or function, but if it would actually be better, then why not? Sorry but "Because it's fine" just doesn't cut it.

Incremental improvements in Intel chips aside, the last 5 years of Macs have been beset with a multitude of issues and disappointment. This was time to draw a line under all that and really a hit a home run with an all new design and feature set, a statement of intent. But no, the price gouging trickle feed update ethos under Cook continues. It will be rev. D if at all before we see ‘bezel free’ LED touchscreen displays, 5G connectivity, a half decent FaceTime camera, MagSafe 3.0 charging, base spec 16GB RAM etc.

As for the retort, well this is how the Intel changeover took place, no redesign for a couple of cycles and then incremental, I’d counter and say this isn’t 2006, and Apple wasn’t the trillion-dollar industry behemoth it was back then before the iPhone.

The M1 MacBook/Pro is like transplanting a revolutionary new engine in a 2010 Mazda instead of a McLaren. A proof of concept nothing more.

Nah, folks are foolish if they purchase anything before rev. H. That’s the sweet spot.

2.8 lbs for the "Air" ☹️

Thanks for nothing.
Like most laptops. and portable computing devices, I suspect much of the weight is in the battery. So, if you want to make significant weight reductions you need to either use a smaller battery or make a significant improvement in battery technology. The M1 chip might provide Apple with an opportunity to redesign chassis of the MBA with a smaller battery. If their consumers don't care about battery life over say.... 12 hours, then they could leverage the low power M1 chip to make some significant weight reductions, since the new M1 MBA has like 15-18 hours. So, Apple could make the MBA lighter, but it's going to cost you something. Like most things in life....there are trade-offs.

MacBook 12 is no longer in production and Apple can't ship new model with old butterfly keyboard, hence Apple likely decided to wait for a MacBook chassis redesign cycle which is planned for 2021. With smaller bezels it can have 12.5 in or even 13 in screen with slightly bigger keyboard, while still keeping it ultralight.

Again? When was it ever anything else? I remember when people here said Apple was doomed after the intel transition was announced.
It goes back and forth. Last year wasn't too bad. It was so bad some years back that I stopped visiting MacRumors for months. Comments had improved somewhat and haven't been over-the-top whiny until this year. The stress of COVID-19 and other issues is making this year particularly bad for online commenting on most sites.

Yep. Which is ironic because the fact that Apple is still churning out regular product updates despite a global pandemic is an awe-inspiring achievement. Sure, I may like some of those products or dislike others, but that achievement on its own is staggering.
