I have read people say over the last year, if you're going to spend MacBook Air money, you might as well go MacBook Pro for a little more. Does this make the MacBook Air more appealing? Looking for my girlfriend who is somehow still using a MacBook Pro 13" 2011 and wants to upgrade this year. She isn't a power user, but I've been hesitant to recommend an air if she wants her computer to last 5+ years.
This makes the MacBook Air a LOT more appealing. I’d go for the quad-core 512GB model for $1299 if she isn’t a power user.

I can't quantify it until unit reviews are out, but whereas the 2019 Air's HD 617 graphics was actually weaker than the 2015 Air's HD 6000, this should at least be a reasonably competent modern iGPU. Doing a bit of digging it looks like these are 10th gen Ice Lake parts, which have a focus on integrated graphics (at some expense to CPU performance) - but it does look like they are Y series parts with a limited 9W TDP which might hamstring them a bit against the aforementioned Pro (which has a 15W TDP) particularly when under sustained load like gaming. For an older/ less demanding game like WoW I think the Pro's Iris Plus 640 would play it at 30FPS on 1080p med/high settings, so I will hazard a guess at yes, but do wait until reviews are out before committing!

https://gamesystemrequirements.com/ is a good site to give you an idea for future reference :)
Thank you so much for the detailed description. I'll likely be buying next week but I don't know when it will arrive with this whole pandemic going on :)

too bad this thing ships in 3 weeks... my 2016 MBP keyboard finally broke and I don't have time to send it for repair... I'd have bought the new Air, send my MBP for repair (I'm still covered by AC) and then returned the Air within the 14 days period. Can do the same trick with the 16'' but it is way more expensive... guess I'll find a USB keyboard in the meantime

I am happy it works for you. I don’t understand what this normal stuff is. For me I find the 2019 MBP can’t even handle basic web browsing and email while running word. I’d call that light usage, but it coughs after a short period of light usage. If I need to use more intense Apps I have to close everything first.
Safari (multiple tabs), Tweetbot (Twitter), Messages, Spark (email), Reeder (RSS), BitWarden (Pass Manager), and other services running. Flipping between everything. Literally no lag. It is a top spec'd MBA from that year though and it isn't driving a Retina display so that definitely helps.

Fans or Fanless?
1 fan, like the base 13” Pro.

Not much of an upgrade other then adding in i-7 Quad CPU built-in better GPU inside and new keyboard. With all upgrades, $1,700.00! Ouch!
Other than a faster CPU, GPU, better keyboard, and lower price, not much of an update. :)

There isn’t much reason for someone to switch from a 2019 13” Pro, but for many in the market to replace a 2015 13” Pro, 2017 Air, or prior, this is a pretty compelling device.

btsvchris : what adapter do you use ? Because usb-c -> hdmi adapters uses displaylink drivers (cpu simulate gpu data a send them to this adapter...) You should use direct thunderbolt cabel to hdmi - so data would go directly from gpu to monitor
Do you mean that this isn't the correct/best connector?

I think these are great devices - but I wonder with people working at home for the next few weeks, are people using laptops? Most of my time working from home, I'm on a more powerful desktop...

I'm on my work laptop with a TS3+ dock connected to my keyboard, mouse, 34" display, etc on my desk at home (but I often work from home anyway, so this was my typical setup when home long before the current situation)

Also, the Air is using the Ice Lake processors customed up to 12W vs the 15W TDP in the 13” Pro, and 7W in the previous Air.

Do you have a source for this? If the 12W TDP is true then this is a fantastic deal.

Last summer I was able to get a brand new 2018 13-inch Macbook Air 1.6 gigahertz Intel 8th Generation Core i5 with 16gb ram and 512gb SSD for $1264.99 at Best Buy, which is a great deal. I haven't used it much because I also have the 2019 Acer Swift 7 and my old 2015 MacBook Air, which I'm planning on trading in.

However, it has the butterfly keyboard. And for peace of mind, I really want to get this new 2020 version because of the new keyboard. Is it crazy for me to trade in my perfectly fine, barely used MBA 2018 that I bought last year and be at a loss for about half of what I paid, just for peace of mind that this new keyboard won't give me problems?

I'm planning on trading in my MBA 2018 and MBA 2015 through the trade-in thing with Apple and that'll give me around $820. And I'm a student, so I'll be able to get the $100 off the new one and I would spec it out, so that would be another $800 out of pocket.

Oh, also, is AppleCare transferrable to another device? Or do I get a partial refund if I return the device?

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Seriously Apple !! 720p Camera in 2020. I was so looking forward to it.

And no WiFi 6, unlike the new iPad Pro. Not a big deal to me. 720p camera is a bummer, as more and more people are working from home and teleconferencing 1080p would have been nice

Your cpu has 2.3 ghz base frequency - So if you load full cpu and gpu - you get a 2.3ghz vs 1.1 (so twice as fast or four times fast in dual core version) and your gpu will be probably 2-3 times faster than in Air 2020...
9W vs 28W...
that's now how it works.... full load would definitely boost up to 3.5 but depends on how much it will throttle

I assume that a good thing about buying laptops now is that the 14-day return window doesn't even start until your Apple store re-opens. They're likely to be shut for weeks here in Europe, so it's like a having a loaner :)

Enerccio : You should count with base frequency and "boost" is a short bonus for you. So If I open 30 tabs in safari Air go to 1.1 and Pro to 2.3...

Someone measure speed between 2 Wifi 6 devices ?

It sounds to me like a backwards update: the new 2020 dual-core 1.1GHz processor is going to be significantly slower than the 2019 dual 1.6 GHz processor. Benchmarks please! [ And not interested in 4 core i7 comparisons using cutesy parallel bench tests - they are artificial and contrived for most users, unless you are running very specialised software ]

Unless Apple wakes up and offer MBP 14" or 16" options with no TouchBar (sadly unlikely),
looks like I'm finally going to be able to drop 2k€ on a i7/16GB/1TB MBA ... and go back to 13" ((

C'mon Apple, where is the MBA15 with 28W 10nm quad+iGPU intel chips ? (((

not really? Base frequency is that, base. It can't run lower without underclocking. Boost will always kick in when you do work and how much it boost depends on the throttling.

kind of a principal thing. If your phone in the palm of your hands can have it, why not your laptop

Do you want your laptop lid to be as thick as your iPhone? Half as thick? No sure that there is a cogent correlation between the two...

What should the resolution be? 1080p? 7MP? What’s the point?

I can acknowledge that the 720p coming from the camera could be better, but I fail to see how this offending your principles?
