I have so many extension cables from old Mac's this is a non issue. For anyone who doesn't have one and this is their first Mac you should probably ask a friend who's owned macs because chances are they have them lying around and don't even know it.

Are any/all older power adapters compatible with the MacBook?

Thanks for the reply and sorry I should have been more clear.

I am wondering if an older MBA 3-prong, thick-cord ac adapter cord can be used on a MacBook's power brick to replace the "duckhead" wall adapter with flip out plugs. I know I can slide it on, but will it damage the MacBook?

Queen6 already answered your question. The extension cord with the 3 prong plug works fine with the newer MagSafe adapter. It will not harm it.

No not from my own experience, Apple simply decided to deprecate the extension cable for the Retina MacBook which personally I think is just a cheap move, although the DC cable is longer. A Mac is a Mac not and IOS device...
