I had my amazing 13' Macbook Pro stolen a few months back and I have been patiently waiting to get a new computer. I want to wait for the new updates but they are seriously taking forever and it looks like it will be another month before an update happens. I recently saw that Microcenter is selling new Macbooks for 799! So I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and buy the Macbook even though I'm not too crazy about it. I really want a bigger screen but not willing to fork over more then a grand for old technology. I think I could live a while with the Macbook and sell it in a few months while not losing too much money so I could upgrade when the newer Pro's come out. What do you think? Good buy or wait?

Right now the US store has a refurbished MacBook for $849 plus tax. Compare the descriptions carefully; you want a unibody MacBook with the new 7 hour battery, not the old 4 hour battery.

I would say pull the trigger

Same thing happened to me two months ago. Was waiting for a month for the new macbook pros, but eventually got fed up using my 7 year old Toshiba satellite and went for a refurb macbook unibody. Cant justify dropping over a grand on year old technology that COULD be updated "next Tuesday for sure".
My advice is to go for the macbook (make sure its late 2009 though) and wait for the second refresh later this year. (After a lot of the kinks have been ironed out of the next refresh.) Probably around WWDC in June.......
You really don´t NEED the pro at the moment, the next refreshes will be 4-8 times better than the current model.
Hope this helps.:)

Come on Tuesday, this will be the week!! lol

My MicroCenter has the MB for 799 and the MBP for 999

Mine had the MBP for $999.99 also, but that ended week before last (I think), right now it's the default $1199.99, does yours still have it for $999.99?

thats $999 + $90 tax - $200 rebate = $890 -- fwiw...

The web site doesn't indicate that there is any kind of rebate involved, just a price of $799.99. If that's correct the tax would be less on $799.99 vs $999.99 for a lower total cost.

you could save even more $$$ by doing this...

print out the MB microcenter ad for $799
go to best buy.
show them the ad.
They will price match.
use your student discount.

$699 final price.

It's the newest Macbook not an older one and there's no rebate indicated. It's a flat 799. Which makes a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. I agree with you astro and think I will bite the bullet today and purchase. Thats also a good idea about best buy but I didn't know they matched online printed out ads. I'll have to look into that. Thanks!

I don't think Best Buy will match an online ad. However, I've heard that brick and mortar Apple Stores will match the Micro Center price.

Yeah, that won't work...

it does and I got myself a 13" MBP for $899. and if it doesn't work I wouldn't be posting about it.

true best buy doesn't price match online ads. but microcenter actually sells the MB and MBP at a discount online and in store walk-in. and microcenter actually confirms their price if say best buy wants to call. I had no problems at best buy and wasn't asked any questions when I brought in the ad. :)

Best Buy matched the ad and knocked $100 off their price on TOP of the student discount? Someone didn't know what they were doing. Best Buy pays more than that for those...weird.

Well if it's on the internet, it MUST be true :p

Are you really going to make me scan and post my receipt :)

Seriously, they price matched for me AFTER the sale as I learned a few days later that MC had it on sale. They stood up to it like any good business should do.

Well I didn't go to Best Buy to find out if they matched but it really doesn't matter cause I'm not a student. So I went in to Microcenter and purchased the Macbook for 799. I must say there customer service was pretty amazing! The manager greeted me at the door and when I purchased the Macbook they had the manager come over and thank me again for the purchase. They were almost tooooo friendly. Anywas, I just finished setting up and man it's so nice having a computer again! I forgot how beautiful the LED screen is!! Though I will miss my Pro I think I will manage on this as long as I get a monitor and Apple Mouse/Keyboard. Anyone know of any good deals?

Congratulations! Welcome back! Enjoy! :)
