I just received a new MacBook Pro 13" (non touchbar) and as I was updating it I could notice an audible hissing noise, quite noticeable in a quite room. The sound is like that that comes out of cheap power supplies when under load. The noise seem to stop when wifi isn't transferring any data.

Is anyone else with a new MacBook Pro noticing this or is it an issue with the machine I received?

I didn't notice anything. Bring it to an Apple store. Of course they are noisy, but they probably have a quiet space.

It happens. I have a Crucial M500 in my MBP that makes all kinds of hissing noises under load.

I was just as surprised, but I wouldn't rule it out.
Interesting, first time I hear about that. I have installed a couple of crucial SSDs but never encountered that.

I bought this MBP second-hand so I questioned whether it was even an SSD when I first realized it was hissing whenever the drive was engaged... thought maybe there was a HDD inside.

Looked it up, sure enough some others have noticed it with this drive.

Haven't had this problem with my 13" non touch bar. Quite the opposite. The system hasn't made a peep yet (fan included) so I was almost worried the fan was broken or something...

Definitely contact apple and have it replaced, new computers should not be acting as such. They're way too expensive to deal with such annoying problems as this

I had similar issue with an SSD on my 2012 rMBP. It was just as whiny as some of the forum's posters :p

Ok, I sent it back and will order a new one. I guess "Coil Whine" would be the correct description for such sound. FYI, the machine was a BTO with 512GB and 16GB Ram. The noise to me sounded to be coming from the WiFi module because every time I would do any Wifi activity I could hear it. And it sounds exactly the same (albeit not as loud) like the one I hear on my old Airport router when transferring data.
