The only sure fire way of measuring is to time from start to finish a normal day's usage. From firing up a youtube HD video or watching a movie, doing some background downloading, torrents, etc, etc.

When watching hulu 1 hr episode goes down to shy of 4 hrs 3/4 brightness to appreciate it. But yes, you are right, I dont have time to cover all variables I'll leave that to the younger crowds. For my purposes, writing/browsing/email is 90% of what I need while on battery charge. Watching TV or playing games I just do with power cable

Agree with screen comments. I had the previous generation antiglare MBP. The screen colors are deeper and richer. I think it is more similar to the screen on the 17 inch MBP. The fonts are smaller due to the increased resolution but still readable. Besides there are things you can do the increase the font (depending on the application-use no squint for Firefox, increase the font in Mail by entering a command into the terminal, same for iCal). Overall pleased with the newer, high res screen.

I setup my i7 upon arrival at 10 AM. Began testing by pushing it _ HARD _ with Shark FX, the resource intensive 3D design app I use for Aerospace Design. I wanted to know right away how effective the thermal management system would be. I'm happy to report that after 4 hrs of punishing computational work it was running very warm, but _NOT Hot_ !

As I sit here in utter amazement, I could not be happier. I run this same $2,000 software package on my six month old MBP C2D, and it will only go for two hours before it's so hot, I have to shut it down to let it cool down.

The antiglare hi-res display is gorgeous. The speed is fantastic, and the dual fans are effective & not too loud. It slides on the desk easily, so I quickly fixed that by using a few strokes of 400 grit sandpaper to remove their slick surface.

Overall I'm very impressed & happy with this new MacBook Pro.

sand paper worked, cant believe I didnt think of that; thanks

here's a photo of improved internet speed, back to normal ~20
I just didn't think to retest it after putting in new HD and installing drivers I guess, has been consistent 20+ for a few tests over last half hour. So yes the airport card is getting proper power and working just fine.

As side note, there was also an update to my airport base station; maybe had something to do with it? Or might have been awhile since I updated I guess.

Excellent report. Thanks for the feedback.

Monkey Island runs 1680 resolution all max graphics flawlessly temperature on gpu at 57 full brightness

Huge improvement from 9400m in my 13" heh to be expected I guess

Thanks for the follow-up OP. The wireless speed issues had me concerned until I got to your other post. Glad to hear its better.

FW800, wow I totally forgot we got this

4 gb file transfer done in a minute yay

both USB ports hold my dependent hub with 4 peripherals just fine, perhaps to be expected but my 13" could not do this

2 hours playing simcity, full effects and brightness

battery reading 61% for another comparison

no audio out from mini display port to hdmi adaptor

I thought this was integrated, but I do not get sound out from hdmi

Screen off

Hulu HD streaming to 47" LG 1080 LED LCD

battery power at 53% after 2 episodes of legend of the seeker

Man that's bogus

So this lil vesa 1.2 certification causes a part price to be increased 500% from $8 to $40

Apple flemmed up not making their own adaptor this time

http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2

$8.50 and gets good reviews.

If Apple made an adapter it would be 5x times the cost of that.

this is what I have, it is NOT vesa 1.2 certified and does not have audio support, monoprices strict cable with no adaptor for minidisplay to hdmi does not have sound either

you need to buy monoprice's usb+hdmi adaptor at 40
or griffin's 40 minidisplay to hdmi adaptor for audio + video

correct prices on vesa 1.2 certified adaptor for video+audio (or with usb for sound out processing):

•~37 for this which uses usb out for audio plus standard minidiaplay -> hdmi adaptor: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2

•29 for Dr. Bott on site says audio support on 2010 macbook pros: http://www.drbott.net/product/9180-MDHK/

•~21 for griffin's though they say it doesnt support audio, cnet's review of apples hdmi shows that it does have audio + video control this is cheapest price I could find on it: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003CK8TZ8...1&creativeASIN=B003CK8TZ8&tag=cnet_mp-3057-20

speakers are loud but my early 2008 pre unibody 15" MBP 2.4GHz is louder.

It doesn't really detract much, since i use bose in my home office and philips at work, but I'm still taking the computer to apple after this week of work to check out why the speakers are quiet even at full force, looks like I may be an isolated case though.

Just loaded my new i7 15" hires anitglare MBP. Took ovenight for the migration assistant to bring the files over from the old laptop.

Things NOT to worry for all those pondering out there:

1) It's dead silent. The CPU runs 37-40C for normal surfing. When running Netbeans and programming it got up to 55C but still stayed silent. This is 10-15C cooler than my 2008 Penryn MBP.

2) It's not hot on the bottom. Not at all. Got a little hot while charging in the upper left corner but in use it's fine. The 2008 could fry eggs in comparison.

3) The internet is not laggy. Speakeasy test is the same as yesterday's test with the 2008.

4) The menus are not too small. But just barely. I just turned 50 and just started needing the reading glasses so I would tell you if they were too small.

5) Anti-glare not too dim. Running 50% and seems fine. Off-angle viewing is not as good but I'm rarely off angle. Very nice not to have reflections especially as compared to my iPad which is very mirror like.

Shows 4 cores in the activity monitor. You might want to give the Apple store salespeople and genuises a break. I know it's 2 cores with hyperthreading but it displays as four and for the average person it will look to them to be a quad core machine.

Is not as uber-zippy as I thought it would be. Firefox first load took 4 to 5 bounces. However, subsquent loads take 2. Don't know if that's because I did not reboot and it keeps things in memory or if it built some kind of system cache.

No read on battery yet, I've been doing my first hours worth of work plugged in.

I just ordered the same machine except high glossy screen. I have always had a matte screen and always liked the glossy ones and everyone I talked to said in the glossy never actually effected them negatively when they were working. i hope I didn't make a mistake.

I have a question regarding batteries and SSD's. I got the 128gig SSD in my new BTO model and was wondering the effects on battery life. Will running a SSD increase times since the there is no moving parts?

yes and no, really depends on which SSD they decided to use. I know the 512gb one is toshiba's which has great efficiency on the energy side, but not sure on specs or make/model on the 128. Let us know when you get it.

Sand Paper?

Maybe I missed it... but what did you do with sandpaper? How did you improve your wireless speed?

Thanks

Sandpaper on the bottom feet of the MBP.. not the screen :)

lol

sandpaper slight rub on the rubber feet to keep it from sliding on desk and table surfaces

it did nothing for internet speed to return to 20 megabit speed

--

I got my speed back to normal after updating airport base station

You can also use sandpaper to rub of some of the aluminum casing near the WLAN antenna; you won't believe how much faster your connection will get!

You might want to preface that with a warning as some people might actually do it :D
