Just picked up a new 2020 MacBook Pro 16" and I have it plugged in but the charging percentage is decreasing so what gives ?

Thanks.

What is the battery percentage? I noticed on mine the other day (system was pretty much idle) that the battery dropped from 98% down to 95% with the charger plugged in. I assumed it was some battery management system that is preventing the battery from sitting at 100% the whole time. Happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

Battery Percentage is the new "XX Minutes Remaining".

When you're downloading a file or installing an update, you'll notice that you get a progress bar, and sometimes you'll get some text: "XX Minutes Remaining". You'll also notice that the "XX" tends to bounce around. How could a task have "12 minutes remaining", and then a couple of minutes later show "21 minutes remaining", you'll ask yourself.

Same thing with battery percentage.

The physical measurement of battery percentage is somewhat imprecise. Also, lots of external things can happen: the battery gets warmer or colder; the ambient temperature gets warmer or colder, the voltage spikes or down; the voltage at the plug ramps up or down. Mebbe cosmic rays, who knows?

You can obsess or not obsess over battery percentage, IDGAF. I, myself, have achieved infinite bliss by not worrying about things. Be like me.

I believe that is the new battery management thing. I noticed that on my 2020 13 inch MBP, while it's plugged it, it would go down to 90% and once its down there, charging kicks up. I turned this feature off as I do take my laptop out with me to work on daily basis so I don't need this feature when I'm using my battery. If it was sitting on the charger 24/7, this would be handy.

That was it, battery management. Does anyone disable it or leave it on ?
