So... If I bought a 3.06Ghz MBP (MacBookPro5,3) that came with 4Gb, is there any point in swapping for 8Gb? Does SL 10.6.1 (and the upcoming .2) recognize the full 8Gb?

Will Parallels and Fusion be able to use it (I run both, and yes, at different times for different reasons). I often need to be able to stand up three different VMs at the same time, each running 1+Gb of memory, and would like to still be able to use the Mac while they're running... :)

Thanks!

Steve

My Mac Pro only has 2gb and it blows. It always freezes up. I've been having firefox crash on me often.

working with almost 8 GB

Hello, yesterday i put finally the 2x4GB in my old macbook pro (late 2008) and keep very good without problems. In others sites like (macfixit) saw that works only with 6 GB and 8GB provoke instability. The only strange thing is that in activity monitor shows 7.75 and not 8GB but in system profile its 8GB. I maded stress tests and running a lot programs to put the RAM up to 6GB and check when fail but i used almost 7GB and keeped runing all the programs.

Does your MBP have dedicated graphics?

In this tests i used the 9400 and now i change to dedicated 9600 but keeps the 7.75. My graphic card is 256 MB in Macbook pro 2.4 GHz processor.

The 9400 uses 256MB of RAM. I am not sure if it always requires that RAM even when the 9600 is in use though.

Question.. .

I believe I have the early 2009 13"MBP 2.53GHz, it currently has 4GB in it, can I install 2x4GB RAM cards?

Good news! =D

That means by the time my MacBook Pro is 4/5 years old I can replace the 4 GB for total of 8GB and give the old girl a boost ^^

Am I missing something? This post is originally from 2008. I thought with the June 2009 update 8GB of RAM became formally supported. Why is this thread on the front page?

I think the post above mine is for last gen MBP

like 2.4/2.5/2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo

Apple originally didn't sell 8 GB upgrade for mine (late 2008 model)

My model is MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz late 2008 and i showed the pictures above.
In internet i dont found information that working with 8 (sometimes 6GB) and APPLE SAID on this specs that machine supports "Up to 4GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM".

I put 8GB any form ... and works :)

Only happen this extrange issue with snow leopard that is a another Thread in MacRumors. In abouth this mac are 8 GB and in activity monitor shows 7.75.

Thank you for the update! I had a long time without checking this thread.
Now my only concer with my late 2008 MBP is its battery.
I have the 15" with 2.8 processor and have been using with 4Gb, and the battery only last for 2h. I had recalibrated the battery, and even bought a second battery, and the same thing, 2h.
With the dedicated card and the chipset one, it is almost the same, only 30~45 min difference.
Using wi-fi, and just checking email and web browsing.
Please excuse my change of topic, and I only seek for a quick answer of other late MBP users: how long does your battery lasts?
Isn't it supposed to last for 5h ?

Which kind of MacBook Pro?

... i put finally the 2x4GB in my macbook pro (late 2008) and keep very good without problems ...

Sorry, but this description "late 2008" does not help very much. Just at "late 2008" there was a big change between the aluminum alloy used since the Powerbook G4 and the new precision aluminum unibody.

The 17" "MacBookPro late 2008" uses the old aluminum alloy and the 15" "MacBookPro late 2008" uses the new unibody case.

Want to point out that on the linkmentioned above that Apple now official supports 8gb for all late2008 models that the 15" 2.4ghz unibody model is not included. It was the low end model of the first release of unibodies, which I think was only released in 15", 17" came a little later (maybe the alum mb came at the same time).

Regardless, apple still only supports 4gb in that model. But I believe this is the model that poster (fb48love, sorry I'm writing this on my iPhone and can't remember your handle) says he got to work. I would love to bear more, like what happens, when you stress usuage above 7gb.

Btw. I have a 13" 2.53ghz mbp with integrated graphics chip only, 4gb ram, in activity monitor it shows 3.75. I think this is normal. I think 250 is set aside for graphics, effectively reducing your memory by 1/4gb.

ok. mikejtl i am also want made more stress tests over 7 GB and post.

more tests

hello, more tests and the activity monitor show up to 7.5 GB and i dot know why?
I maded finalcut rendering, parallels exporting HD file and more 30 apps opened.
OBS:Also wait 1 hour ...
