Hey all,

I believe seen this issue mentioned a couple times, however it seems my new MacBook display is having some display/glass quality issues. I’ve owned it for just over a month and noticed micro chips and cracks in the screen already! I had my last MacBook for 8 years and never experienced issues like this. I really take pride in my care and ownership of my products so this seems very unusual and delicate. Use so far has been very minimal just at home without any major in/out and travel. Is this normal or a defect? This makes me paranoid about even using and moving my computer. ?? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advance!

I'm so sorry to see that, I can't imagine how it's happened. A crack would suggest to me that there's too much pressure surrounding the edges of the glass, but chips? Hmm.. ?

Definitely take it in. I've had a few Mac laptops over the years. Had to have a top case replaced, an optical drive that failed, a cooling fan replacement, and a bum trackpad. My experience with Apple has been pretty good when it comes to support.

It looks like a bb gun shot hit the display?? I only say that because I had a bb gun and shot glass surface with it and a very light bb hit is what this looks like. Something with a blunt point but sharp point hit the display hard and left the marks. Maybe a rock or other piece of something got wedged in between the display and keyboard and putting it in a bag or some pressure was enough to cause this defect??

I am not saying this was not an accident but chipping in a radial fashion doesn't often< just appear> OR on a display without some force striking it. It also looks like a band of cracking on the screen along the line where the impact or crater on the display is?

Sometimes accidents happen at the start of the product life cycle unfortunately and of course it could be just a defect. If it is just a defect or otherwise it sucks and I am sorry that this has happened to you. I am not trying to blame you the user but I am just giving my experience as once you see a certain type of damage that you have caused before you can't unsee it.

Good luck!!

I think the question to ask is... Do you have AppleCare +? Because Apple is likely to declare those chips and cracks on the screen as accidental damage. Not saying that it is, but I suspect that's what Apple will tell you when you bring it to them.

would be interesting to know what part is exactly on the opposite part of the Screen if you close the Macbook?
maybe the keyboard or the border of the touchbar touches the Screen when closed and/or carried by hand?

When I saw the extremely small bezels of the new 14" and 16" MBPs exactly this came at once in my mind:
"Will the new Screen be too less/not enough protected and get damaged or even be torn a bit while transporting the MBP?"

Saw already light erosions on MBP screens (but no cracking) in former models, on one saw even the surroundings of the keyboards keys when the screen was not on (=black).

perhaps a problem of justage in production process or incorrect tolerances of the tolerated distances between Screen and keyboard/touchscreen?

Since apple has often enough denied evidently bad design of new product lines for years ("You´re holding it wrong!") (GPU failure in masses of MBP 2008-2013 for years, Screengate of 2015 Retina MBPs, failing trash-can MacPros that fulfilled its naming, ....) I wait ALWAYS at least about a year before touching new hardware and/or new IOS/MacOS products. This principle saved a lot of money after 2 macs ended dead. I paid a high price until I finally chose my consequences for purchasing new apple products.

Let us know all about this case to be informed (and possibly warned)...

Good luck.
