I seems like my new Macbook pro requires me to type in the password BEFORE it boots up. I like the old method better where it boots up first and then asks me to enter the password. Is it possible to change?

Sounds like you have FileVault enabled? You can disable it and your disk won't be encrypted anymore, if that isn't a concern for you.
