Well, it is definitely a price shock. I'm not saying it's not worth it, but it is very expensive, more than what people were expecting. I live in Brazil and the retina MBP was launched here today costing US$ 4,500 (base model) and US$ 6,300 (high end model). I just can't afford it.

That's nice, now do it in UK pounds, then use the Samsung 830 SSD as that seems to be the most reliable. Plus I get a discount on Apple stuff, so for me it IS cheaper to buy the new Retina machine maxed out.

I agree. I bought in the US through an .edu discount and the retina version is cheaper than adding in a 512GB SSD from Newegg. I couldn't care less about ODD since I never used it once in my previous MBP or the ethernet for that matter. Retina is the hands down choice. It is only a matter of time before the MBP "classic" is phased out completely for the newer form factor. This is the beginning of the end for the 15" MBP classic and then likely the 13" MBP classic since the 13" MBA will become more and more comprable to the 13" Pro.

In 1.5-2 years time the line up will be:
11" MBA or equivalent
13" MBA or equivalent
15" MBP in the new form factor we saw today

;)

You Apple sheeple are ridiculous

cost to make new MBPRO in China-roughly $350 US

new MBPROs start at $2,200?? Lol
way overpriced, I'll buy a 2011 model :)

If you think that even the CPU and GPU combined cost less than $350 to make, I've got a bridge to an incinerator I'd love to sell you. Only $349.

I have to share an experience. In a fmr. life, I drove a truck to pay for college. Well, I delivered a shipment of high-end leather 8-Ball jackets to a distribution whse in Queens, NY. The mgr. turned out to be an old friend as well as a family member to the owner. He shared the mfg. cost of these $800+ retail price jackets... Less than you and I pay to fill a motorcycle's gas tank!

You AND I would likely be very shocked at what Apple actually pays for those CPU's & GPU's. :-(

Well sadly yes but I have been without a laptop since i sold my older macbook in april, besides that I'am so blinded with the thinness and retina display that i guess the price is justifiable, i will try to haggle the price when i come to buy it though.

Not any more. Apple is forcing Foxconn to give everybody a raise. All the PC laptop makers will go out of business because they cannot afford the higher Chinese wages while Apple can.

But still, you cannot say the new machine has premium pricing when it clearly doesn't. It's expensive but in no way more then the standard machine that makes it premium. You would have to say the tankard machine has premium pricing too? And if you add Apple's 512gb SSD to the standard MB Pro then that is expensive, way more then the Retina machine.

Where did I ever say the Retina Pro has premium pricing  You must have me confused for someone else.

Look at the top of this page. It is MacRumors, not MacRumours. This is primarily a US based website with a majority of the members being US based. Sorry, but what applies in your country is not necessarily the same as in other countries.

Also, why insist on using the Samsung SSD? Various members (as well as numerous review site) have shown that the Crucial M4 is still very quick and reliable while being cheaper.

I'm really not very happy with the RMBP changes, but to give Apple some credit I think the cost price to make one is not quite US$350 that the other troll was purporting.

I think it probably costs them $1500 to make one, and they get $700+ in pure profit from each.

...am I the only one who said "huh, that's not that bad"? It's not that I'm an "Apple sheep", it's that I understand Apple products are always priced higher than their PC equivalents... a bump of that size wasn't that shocking for the leaps they took.

No you're not, I was watching a liveblog of the keynote and when I saw the base specs being listed out I instantly thought 'oh no, it's going to cost $3000 and that's without the 512GB SSD I wanted'.

Then the $2199 price tag came up and I thought, hey, that went better than expected. End result, higher trim Retina Pro with more geebees thrown in for $2700.

Configure the old 15" mbp with similar specs and it's more expensive. You don't get the better screen and don't have a 16gb ram option.

If you think thats high, you should see the margins that restaurants run on. Must be why there are so many Ferraris parked outside of MickeyD's. Oh wait, different industries, different business models. NOT comparable.

Now I'm really glad that I bought a refurb 13' MBP 2,8 i7 since the price tags on new ones are higher and the sepc bump is not that significant for me.
As for the new retina MBP - it's cool, but there's always a "but" for me with Apple computers - it's out my league price wise and I don't do serious graphic design so I wouldn't need it anyway. But it's my right to complain;)
I've talked with my friends who do graphic design for a living and though these are only 2 opinions I do agree with them that while the processing power is quite nice the following aren't:
- 256GB in the base model is laughable - they would fill it up in seconds with couple of raw images. Thus you can't go without an external HDD whether your mobile or at a desk. 512GB option is only decent.
- 2 usb ports - I know it's Apple and it seems they hate to give people USB, but the fact is that most people pros and non pros use it! 2x USB is kinda of poor.

So you have a light and thin ultra portable laptop with 256GB disc space, which basically makes it... imobile. And if you're using it as a desktop replacement you can't do without an external... it's not like you'd just paid over $2000 for it:confused:

To sum up, I think the new retina MBP is nice, cool and whatnot. But apart from being a pro you really gotta be a true fanboy to buy it - in my opinion.
Plus the new (old form) MBP are now more expensive. As if the old ones were too cheap... At least you get 8GB RAM with the higher end models. Finally some reasonable decision from Apple.

I completely agree. They took a great notebook but don't give you storage space. A 2.5" HDD slot should have been in there along with the SSD and if it was a bit thicker nobody would really care.
Now it is a notebook for those consumers that only store all their media files in the cloud. That is what I would expect from a Windows 8 tablet or some Ultrabook but not a 15" power house with no compromise in CPU, GPU.

I would like to know what people are okay with cloud data storage that need that much processing power.

And why is there still no working optimus solution. People will again have to force the Intel GPU. Especially with external screens I never need more than some 2D video acc. or other 2D stuff, the HD 4000 would do fine but one has to use a 650M.

That is probably an industry standard. No company is going to sell you their product at cost because they would be bankrupt. Apple has to cover their overhead and also please their stockholders.

I would have to look at other companies SEC filings. I don't know about an industry standard. Apple has been charging a premium ever since they were incorporated.

Hard to do math?

15" 2.6 ghz 8 gb Ram i7 MBP ( non-retina ) = $2199
15" 2.6 ghz 8 gb Ram i7 MBP ( retina ) = $2799

Crucial M4 512 gb SSD = $450

15" 2.6 ghz i7 MBP ( non-retina ) + 512 GB SSD = $2199 + $450 = $2649

How do you people come with numbers that say that the Retina MBP is cheaper?

( btw, with the non-retina you get a free 750 gb HDD which you can put in an external exclosure and use it as external storage )

Samsung 830 512GB: $699—which is what the retina MBP has but in an enclosure. The Crucial M4 512GB has 20% 1 egg reviews on NewEgg—not so good. Lots of failures. Furthermore the write speeds for the Crucial are much slower.

So you'd rather have a MBP with a slower, less reliable SSD, no retina IPS display with much improved black levels and contrast with reduced glare, with worse speakers, one less microphone (yeah I know whatever), no HDMI, a fan system that is much louder (actually annoying to me on my current early 2011), only one Thunderbolt port, and an overall less portable system and save yourself $150? By all means go right ahead, lol. My next-gen, "most advanced Mac Apple has ever built", "highest resolution notebook display ever shipped", blazing-fast SSD equipped MacBook Pro is already ordered. And I don't have to waste time digging around under the hood or enable any TRIM hacks when it gets here :D

Splitting hairs. Like any SSD maker, Samsung has their share of problems as well. It's all moot anyway because no matter what Apple uses for flash storage failures are going to be their problem. And Apple's choices for their innards haven't always been stellar.

What really bothers me about Apple's path now is the fact I can't go inside and upgrade it anymore. Let's say the bottom falls out of the SSD market and 2 years from now 1TB drives sell for $199. I have to nullify my Applecare to add it myself. I can't believe there isn't more of an uproar over this.
