The same problem here with the latest MacBook Air (1.8 GHz Intel Core i7). The worst part is the MBA actually turns off because of the heat. I thought the problem was my machine, but now I feel hopeless. I never imagined that the newest equipment would not run a rather basic application....

We have both a 13" and an 11" 2010 MBAs and use Skype frequently. I am yet to see either of them shut down because of Skype.

Bring it to apple and have them repair it. Skype should not make a macbook shut down.
 
Maybe it's Lion that's the problem?

Running Skype 2.8 on an old snow leopard Macbook without any increase in fan speed or noise.
 
skype ran fine on my PBG4 :D
well until the update that killed it on PowerPCs.

But yes, skype seems to be intensive.
My graphic card has to switch from intel 3000 to Radeon HD.
And the fan gets kicked in often.
However its not a problem for me using my mac.
