My 15" i7 has been good so far, was able to use it outside on my patio, but thats not terribly far away. (~80 + upstairs)

But then again, I'm not using wireless N since I have the old dome Airport Extreme.
*wishes my dad would understand things about computers and get a new airport and replace his imac g4 or at least use the c2d imac we have* :)

But you have an Apple Router... the problem is with the other ones!

No problem with mime.

Again, what brand is your wi-fi router?

Both of my MBPs work perfectly fine with a Linksys router with third party firmware at 2.4 GHz wireless-G and a d-link router at 5GHz wireless-n.

I own the i7 15" and have wonderful WIFI reception. In fact my WIFI reception is the best I have ever seen. My friends who own windows laptops can't even see some of the WIFI networks that I can successfully connect to. Could not be happier with my WIFI reception, I think you might have an isolated case.

I am using a hacked Linksys router running the Tomato firmware ( wireless G )

No problems

I have had NO:) problems with my MBP 17" i7. I have used it at my home with an Apple Airport Extreme with several devices using the same network. A friends PC, a Ipad, Iphone, and Tivo all using the same network.

I do several workshops a year and often there is as many as 10 pc's & mac's on the same network and I have never had a problem.

You may want to use a different router, or attempt to change the wireless channel your router broadcasts on. I have seen that correct issues like that in the past. That said I have no problems with my 15" i5 and have never had any issues with the past 4 Apple Portables i've owned when it came to Wifi.

i have a 2010 i5 15" MBP. I bought the laptop in april 2010. for the first month and a half it was working perfectly. over that last couple weeks i've been having the issue that most posters have been faced with. For me it varies. sometimes the internet can stay on for hours and other times it can drop out every 5 minutes. This is getting super annoying. I'm going back to the apple store sometime this week. any body get a fix for this?

I just got my MBP 13" yesterday and out of the box the wireless has seemed pretty awful. I was expecting way better for what I paid for. My 4 year old Acer laptop is MUCH faster on the web.

The MBP shows more connection bars than the Acer, but I have to click links multiple times to get them to open.

Plugged an ethernet cable into the MBP and the web speed is normal. I guess I need to try using wireless somewhere else.

Our router is d-link di-514 which is pretty old...I feel like that could be an issue, but then why would my old laptop still load things pretty fast?

Really bummed about this right now, I don't want to have to get it checked out already (2 days in).

Well aside from my minor quibbles with the weird no button trackpad, it's great.

You don't like the track pad? wow ... Firstly there is a button. Two in fact. You just have to set it up in preferences. It's one of my favourite things about the mbp. Visible buttons are ugly. Learn to use the gestures (eg 2 finger tap for right click, 2 finger scrolling, four finger swipe etc) and you will never look back.

Utter Dissappointment

The wifi in my apt seems fine in most places but in my bedroom, at my desk (of all places), my macbok drops the signal all the time, and sometimes just wont operate at all.

Fine, so I think it's my wifi. But I just tried it out with my friends piece of crap 5 year old laptop and it works perfectly, in fact faster than my internet connection in the supposedly good areas of the apartment.

I just "upgraded" from my dell inspiron to this €1100 MBP 13 inch and it cant even pick up wifi like my old pc laptop??? And it seems a lot of other people are experiencing the same thing.

I am utterly disgusted.

Is this type of nonsense common with Apple???

My 2010 15" MBP has constant Wifi dropouts, sometimes minutes at a time. Sometimes I have to reconnect. Yet it gets 4 bars. My MacBook never had these problems. It's generally slower, too. It's now useless for online video like Hulu. Anyone else seeing this? I wonder whether it's hardware (e.g. they moved the antenna, and/or because of the metal case) or software/drivers? I'm going to submit feedback after input from ya'll.

I'm having exactly the same problem! Full signal indicated, but the MBP just won't load pages or receive mail at random intervals throughout a day.

There are also PC sufferers in my house that don't seem to have any problems. I have no issues with the same Netgear router when using wifi on my iPhone or iPod Touch, it's just the MacBook Pro.

I have a Netgear Router and my MBP never drops out.
Netgear routers are notorious for MBP dropouts.
why dont you try resetting the settings of your rotour and taking it back to factory settings.
I believe the problem is due to some compatibility issue between your rotour and MBP

Sent From My iPhone
^ Not really

Thanks, I will try that later.

More worryingly though, I'm still getting dropouts when I take the MBP into work, where we have Cisco Wifi! It's nowhere near as bad as when I'm at home, but it still drops out once or twice throughout the working day (at home I'm lucky if I can get 10 minutes without a major dropout)!

At the minute I'm thinking it could be a hardware problem, so I think I'm going to make a trip to the Apple Centre at the weekend!

You might have interference problems with your network if you are using other wireless devices like cordless phones in your area. A solution that might work would be changing your router WiFi channel to Channel 6, this could eliminate interference. You will need to do this in your router settings, for a non Apple router, usually, go to http://192.168.0.1 and it should pull up your router settings, where you can modify them. For Apple AirPort Base Stations, use the Apple AirPort Utility.

Hope this helps! Channel 6...

Good luck with this!

I have the same exact issue. Intermitent dropouts and sometimes i have to reconnect manually. The interesting thing is that i own a TP-Link WR941ND, that features a Atheros chip. Another very interesting thing is that with my previous router, a TP-Link WR-541G i had no issues at all.
Don't matter how my new router is configured it stills have the issues. I also bought 7 DBI antennas to get a stronger signal but it also made no difference. I believe that this is a issue regarding the driver on our macs, i would bet that it is something related to packets that are exchanged between the router an the computer to made both know they still connected:
router: "hey are you connected?"
laptop: "yep!"

The odd thing is that some days it runs for ours without any issue and others it drops it frequently. I already contacted TP-Link and they sad that it is not a issue with the router itself, since with other laptops/gadgets (including my ipod) they experience no issue with it.

Seems like there's quite a few of us having the same problem.

Incidentally, none of the suggestions mentioned above worked for me. Thanks for trying to help though guys.

I'm calling into the Apple Shop tomorrow see if it's a hardware fault... if not, I suppose I'm going to have to buy an Apple Airport product see if that fixes it!

They should give us a free airport express to shut our mouths up.

same problem

currently my family owns 4 mbp and 2 mb and without question the mb pull in and hold a wifi signal better than the mbp...I believe it has to do with the differences with antenna placement and the metal vs. plastic cases. My wife and I will be using our computers next to each other in our room and her mb will chug along just fine while my mbp drops connectivity on a regular basis...quite frustrating. Im actually holding back from purchasing another mbp because of this issue. I dont think Apple wants to own up to it but I think its similar issue to the current problems with the iphone 4 and antenna placement...just my .02 cents worth!

I have a 13" 2010 MBP and have great reception. I have had a few times where I couldn't connect to certain sites, but it ended up being something with Safari. Firefox worked fine. I previously had a Netgear router and have since purchased an Airport Extreme. I love the new router as it works even better than the last. I had no problems, but saw the advantage in the dual-band system and the ability to create a guest network.

All aluminum macs have always seemed to have crappy wifi range when compared to polycarb macbooks or plastic PCs

agreed

That has been my experience...this summer my family traveled to Italy...and invariably...the white macs would easily find wifi signals that the mbp's would not pick up and I talking both macs sitting on the same desk right next to each other. So while I'd love to upgrade my existing mbp for the latest and greatest, Im inclined just to buy a white macbook as I use it while traveling on business and need a reliable wifi machine.

I think that a communication mistake is happening here.

At least with me, the problem isn't with bad reception, actually, i get a very good reception. The real problem is that it still looses connectivity, and actually, while i'm writing this it just happened again! - pause to disconnect -> reconnect manually - As i sad, it is not a weak signal or anything like this, it just behaves in a abnormal way. Sometimes it works, some others it keeps dropping connection very often.

Also, i noticed that sometimes it just reduces the link speed, like, it connects with 130 mbps and 5 minutes after it is in 78 and you suddenly feels a laziness on browsing the internet and you found out that it is connected at just 5 mbps.

It is really disappointing. I bought this new "n" router to get better transfer rates and what i got is a headache, since my previous router had no problems at all..... i think at this point, that my macbook pro just hates me deeply....

I don't have a serious problem with my wifi but it ain't great.
With my old plastic Samsung I used my router 25% signal strength and worked fine anywhere. Now with the 15" i5 AG I need the router at full signal and it still only seems to be just enough. I do have experienced drop outs.

I think it is the Aluminum Case and my Samsung was really good with Wifi. It was better than the old plastic MacBooks of a friend.
