Well, today I took my macbook off charge, and it had been on charge for a good 14 hours (and it wasn't even flat to start).
I used it for 15 minutes, and it came up with the "running on emergency power" warning.

I looked, and my battery was down to 30%, and said 9 minuets remaining.

I plugged it to the charger just now, and it says it will be fully charged in 56 minutes. I then accidentally removed the charger, and it just went off. I plugged the charger in again, and it's at 0% battery.

It's been working well until now (although yesterday I think it may have done a less extreme version of this, which I put down to not having plugged the charger in properly overnight.

I used system profiler and it says battery condition: check.

It's a new aluminium, and I've had it less than 4 weeks.

Can anyone offer me insight or guidance please?

edit: it just got worse. Even with the charger plugged in, the battery meter won't get passed 0%.

Sounds like a dud. Just call apple and you'll probably get a new battery in less than a week.

I guessed as much. Do i just ring the number that it says on the store, or is there a particular number?
