Just another point, could it be that if someone had, for example, "Fabulous Web Guru" or similar, that that could leave them open to an onslaught of private messages from people that didn't feel their small coding problem was worth a thread, but need help, so just PM the 'guru'?

It could get out of hand for the poor guys who are good at stuff. Also, at the moment, people post because they don't know who can help them, so everyone gets the benefit when a post is resolved and it's searchable later on.

Does that make any sense? I'm feeling particularly incoherent this evening. :eek:

But don't you think that those with specific areas of interest are naturally drawn to the forums where they can best help others?

Thats true I am sure. But I am also sure that not everyone gets time to check everything every day and might hence miss a thread they would like to help with for a day or two. What I was thinking is a list of those with specialty areas (done by area) with the explicit reference to PM them and let them know that the questioner has started a thread that they hope you will help them on. Perhaps even a button or way to broadcast this to anyone who wants to add a category to some sort of auto email alert...

Just a thought.

Lau, your post is right on the dot... Actually, a little while ago there was thread that ended up talking about this issue. Some members already feel a slight 'burden' from PMs so I definitely agree w/ your post. And you're right; part of the convenience of MR as an internet forum is that anyone can search and find relevant results (and hopefully answer) from past threads.

And don't worry, your post makes plenty of sense! :D

For this reason alone I've stopped helping people.

Helping people is so overrated. :p

/I'm just waiting until I get paid to do it.
//then, I'll help people again.
///that'll be $49.95, sir.

In terms of making new members feel welcome, perhaps their titles could be changed from "newbie" to "Just Starting Out" or something along those lines.

The progression would then make more sense: "Just starting out" "regular" and on and on.

Or, we could do what ieXbeta does. This is a link to a post I made in the AppleTalk part of the forum there. Notice how I have my own custom "title"/"greeting" but then underneath I have my member status. Sponsor, as the case may be there.

Underneath that there is some info which really doesn't need to be posted anywhere but my profile, but is posted anyway (my post count, date joined, member#, etc.) ieX also allows everyone with 200+ posts an avatar.

Now, I will probably get kicked off both boards if this suggestion causes controversy, but join ieX and swamp the Appletalk forums with tons of posts (useful, of course) so that they know their IS an Apple presence other than me and dkreifus and kouby there. :D :D Now, I think there may be a global mod from ieX who is a 68040 here... not sure on that. He has the same avatar and is from France in ieX and from "somewhere on earth" here.

Okay, here's the deal. It's a Monday afternoon and work's a bit slow and I probably haven't had nearly enough coffee, but I was thinking how cool it would be if some of the more helpful members of MacRumors were given special/unique titles.

I was thinking this because seeing people like yenko with such a mediocre title (member or regular or something) doesn't really do him/her justice and if his/her title was changed to something like Mac Doctor/Doctoresse, then the newbies would know that the advice he/she gives is good. Of course, there are many others in the same position such as CanadaRAM, Mitthrawnuruodo and Duff-Man. The deserving people would be determined by the moderators, of course.

Is this a good idea or am I just still a little hung-over form the weekend? :)

Geee...gosh......aww shucks.....mad-jew......I just don't know what to say...maybe a Susan Lucci award or something! :D :D :D

Opinions: I have tons of opinions, but who gives a crap! :rolleyes:

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it! :)

So what's the current progression? What happens when I hit 500 apart from getting my avatar?

I've searched but cannae fin'nything laddie?
