New Mail Notifications

Is it at all possible to receive new mail notifications without having the Mail.app open?

don't think so. but there are some menubar apps that allow you to do that. Like MailUnread but I don't even know if that can notify you of emails you just received.

If you use GMail mail tab for gmail is a great little menubar app
