In Map I often use the pointer at the bottom left to centre it on my current location. Just this week I noticed the icon changes colour when I touch it and if I touch it again it changes to compass mode and shows me which way my phone is pointing. I can't believe I never saw this before - is this new?

Nope, it's been there for a while. I find that it's a useful feature :)

It's been there since 2009 with "iPhone OS 3.0" and was first introduced on the iPhone 3GS.
